Thread: One of the greatest freeware Aircraft of the Year...

1. Default One of the greatest freeware Aircraft of the Year...

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-02 AT 08:56PM (EDT)[p]...is F. Sanchez-Castaner's ATR 42-300 version 2! Allow me to rave. This aircraft is amazing. It boasts a new and improved virtual cockpit that is the best I have ever seen with excellent detail and texture. I was astounded to notice the sun visors are reflective! Never seen that before. Even the seats and carpeting are remarkable. I'm getting excellent FPS too! The 2d panel is outstanding as well and the exterior textures are reflective. Several fine repaints have already been created by Anniette Chabout (American Eagle and Delta ASA). The flight model feels about right, too and is wonderfully stable. And to think this is freeware! Mr. Sanchez-Castaner is a master and he must be awarded for this first-class, world-beating creation.

The file is called fsc_atr42_300v20.zip. Get it at Avsim.com or FSPlanet.com. (At the time of this post, he hasn't uploaded it to Flightsim.com)

I love the plane, but I don't think the flight model is really that good. For a start, when I increase throttle, the nose dips. Reducing the throttle causes the aircraft to climb. Can be a pain when attempting to land.

I think I agree with you. It is fantastic. A big plus it is a good AI aircraft as well. Many third arty addon planes are useless AI planes. But this one is an exception.

Agreed! It's an amazing plane. Both the exterior model and panel are really nice.

"when I increase throttle, the nose dips. Reducing the throttle causes the aircraft to climb"

Hi Tony:
This reaction is quite plausible. Look at the design of the ATR – especially the thrust vector in relation to the CG of the aircraft. Note that the thrust (and thus the force) is applied to the top of the aircraft – not the centerline. This is the same pendulum motion you get when you fly a seaplane (most notably a Lake). So, it may not be perfect, but it is a reasonable expectation of this design.

See Ya,
Kathy

Downloaded and installed this ATR. Great look and panel. BIG Problem however. After loading at terminal and checking out plane and panel I taxied to runway and then FS2k2 shut down "unresponsive program". I have been running FS2k2 in W98 compatibility since that has solved all my incompatible panel/Windows XP problems. I exited and ran in XP but still crashed. I loaded another plane then switched to ATR and immediately crashed the Sim. I ran Model Repair utility on mdl and it reported corrupted mdl and could not be repaired. I'm not sure I can trust that. Any XP users having success with this plane? Looks like I will have to avoid it.

Hatrick,

I am running XP Pro and am not experiencing any issues with the ATR.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-04-02 AT 07:03PM (EDT)[p]Ditto here! I have it in the original livery, delta, and american livery. Make sure you have installed the gauges properly and in the appropiate folders. Also read the "fine" manual that explains the different gauges. The only problem I have with this aircraft is the only light switch that seems to work on the overhead panel is the strobe light switch.

The designer has a patch but his ISP shut down his site due to a high number of hits. I suspect he didn't read all the restrictions on network activity placed by the ISP. He indicated he would try to resolve this problem.

Guys, Thanks for responding. I have since gone in an inspected all folders and everything is in place. Three stand alone gauges plus Cab zipped gauge is in Gauge folder as per installation instructions. Instructions indicate to not unzip the Cab gauge file. I have just gone in and aliased the King Air panel to this ATR and all works fine so my problem is related to the panel as usually is the case. It's odd like I said because all previous unusable panels have been working fine since I changed FS shortcut to Windows98/Me compatibility. Let me know if you have gauges installed as I do. Thanks again
