Extremely helpful link - thanks so much, guys! When it comes to buying RAM to get the most out of the current XP 32-bit system, is 4GB pretty good (assuming I implement the /3GB switch), or should I look to get more? How much more? (I can replace my 1GB sticks with 2GB ones, for example; I may be looking into faster-rated RAM anyway, in order to accommodate the CPU over-clocking.) And will the Q6600 over-clock enough, or am I better off upgrading to a Q9500 (the largest CPU which will fit this motherboard)?

FSX is mainly CPU dependent; you need a good gpu as well but cpu is key.
My personal choice would be to first look to upgrading the ram to 4 gigs and fine tuning the system per the link provided including the addition of the 3Gb switch (I use 2560 per the example and find this setting works best for my system). I also use 2x2gigs as opposed to 4x1gig. This may prove satisfactory, but certainly is the more cost effective route.
Overclocking is certainly an option if you feel comfortable doing so and anything above 3Ghz would be beneficial.
If after fine tuning your system using the link and adding ram you continue to be unsatisfied with performance then upgrading is always an option.
Anything more than 4gigs of ram on a 32 bit OS is a waste of money - info in the link will explain. If you upgrade to a 64bit OS then 6 gigs would be recommended. Of course the better the hardware and the faster the ram the better the FSX performance assuming everything is fine tuned including bios settings etc.
Awesome answer, kagazi - thank you so much (and to everyone else who jumped in to offer their experience).
If anyone has views on the multiple monitors vs. single projector issue, I would still welcome your input and experience. Would going this route and getting rid of the extra views create a noticeable performance increase as well, either in the form of added fps or being able to get one more notch on my scenery sliders?
Do multiple monitors also add "drag" if the 2nd one is is just showing 2D panels (and no 3D scenery), or is just very presence of something on the graphic card's 2nd port enough to add stress to the GPU? (Mine is over-clocked, by the way - this is what differentiates a "Sonic" card from the stock nVidia GT - plus I have 2 which can be linked via SLI if the 3rd monitor goes away.)
Hi,
I have a similar system/spec as yourself
I also use a projector and two monitors - one for FSCommander; the other for a hybrid panel I made/make for each aircraft that I use.
No "current" image - just this first trial of the hybrid panel but you get the idea (?).
I use the two monitors all the time and the projected image for the straight view ahead.
I also constructed an extra "window" in the panel.cfg file to give me the clear view ahead with just a truncated overhead panel that gives the impression of flying just looking over my glareshield into the view ahead bounded by the "overhead". It gives the impression of flying with the panel close up and at hand with the scenery unobstructed ahead.
I can also switch views to look at the aircraft in Spot View on the projector screen
I am running all of this from the one PC with FSC, RC4, REX, Ult Tfc2, Ult Terrain (all), GEX, FS Global2008.
Frame rates average around 45-50 up in the air but reduce to around 15 - 20 on the ground at busy airports. Having said that there was a post here last week from some guy who has his FPS locked at 12 and is thrilled with the results
I also run the 3G-switch from my 4Gb RAM/XP-Home 32 bit.
Works for me

hey, ihave a computer and i need 1 GB of memory becuase it only has 512 MB of physical memory and i have fsx and it freezes in an hour of flightplease help, do i need more than 1 GB of memory or a new video or graphics card? Please Help
Thanks for giving me a glimmer of hope, Kennyhall! Are you over-clocking your CPU, or did you find that the extra RAM and switches were enough? Some good ones also for FSX.CFG at http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=281538
I personally found that UsePools=0 created a bunch of screen artefacts, whileHIGHMEMFIX=1 and AffinityMask=14 instantly gave a noticeable performance increase.

My CPU is "out of the box" - no clocking
Intel Q6600 quad core at 2.4 thingies
My 4Gb RAM - using the "3Gb switch" works well for me and runs everything from the single PC as already stated.
I do have a few of Nick's Tweaks in the FSX.cfg file but nothing excessive.
