Thread: A Sociopath's Guide To Flight Simulation.

  1. #1

Default A Sociopath's Guide To Flight Simulation.

Check out this article by By Richard Burgess a.k.a. Bill Smith in the features
    section on the front page.
    http://flightsim.com/main/feature/socio1.htm

It hits close to home in a kind of "hauntingly familiar" way.

I used to fit flight simming into my everyday world as often as I could,
but lately I've noticed that I now fit the everyday world into my flight simming as often as I can.

    How priorities can change!

It's a great article. Can't wait for part II.

Interesting. I found the way he spoke about the people who came into his office to discuss problems quite aggressive...!

I don't think that i'll be able to FS at work in 3 yrs... although working in aviation may lessen the desire lol. Very nice read tho, I have done some of those things during class lol

This is an excellent feature and one with many obsessive undertones we will all not doubt recognise!

That's a very nicely written article. I prefer to confine myself just to posting on the forums from my office. In fact, I am doing so right now. I'm surprised he actually even flys from there. Should he be caught, then...

Yup, I'm in the same boat as JB - you find a way to fit your every day life around FS at some point once you get involved with it, weather it be flying, developing or what not - it is what consumes you......but that's a good thing - there's alot worse we could be doing!

This article's funny. I'm the same way----when the Mrs. is working and I have the day off, the first thing I think about is "Now I can do that cross-country flight I've never had time for!"

After I finish her little "to-do" list, of course.....

The guys who say he is nasty to the people in his office fail to pick up on the title, a SOCIOPATH'S guide should have given you guys a hint I think it would be hilerious if I didnt see a lot of myself in this article, although I cant fly my sim at work

I try to combine my flightsimming as much as possible with my school work, great ways to do so are for instance flying long haul flights while studying, or when reading a book for school. For me, it's still a hobby although it also serves as a replacement for something I want to do, but probably won't be able to do (the physical tests would be the problem). And it's safer than the real thing Although I'd still like to know how it feels to land a jet... (guess I'll need to book a full motion sim someday xD)

I hate to spoil the vision you all have of Mr. Burgess but he is strictly fictitious, as are his job and co-workers. While I have it on good authority that his real-life counterpart, Mr. Smith reportedly does fly during his workday, it is one of the few extra benefits to being self employed and working from home. He has indeed been "caught" several times by this wife and daughter who just roll their eyes and remind themselves that he could be up to much worse!

Just remember the word "fiction", enjoy the rest of the series and know that Computer Pilot Magazine's loss is FS.Com's gain!
