Thread: Increase terrain draw distance

  1. #1

    Default Increase terrain draw distance

All my settings are maxed out, with a whole bunch of add-ons (UTX, FEX, GEX) and run at a constant FPS of 40. I would like to increase the terrain draw distance, as the terrain looks completely unrealistic when I am flying at higher altitudes. Any suggestions as to how I can do this?

Also, would anyone know of another terrain add-on that would compliment nicely UTX and GEX?

    Thanks much!

you can increase the detail by changing this setting in the fsx.cfg.

    LOD_RADIUS=

if you try 5.5 then 6.5 all the way up to 8.5 until you are unhappy with fsx load times as changing this setting will make fsx load slower when you load a flight but this works more for lower altitude flying.

Yep, I run at 8.5 and there seems little benefit going beyond this.

If your system will handle it try up to 8.5 but remember that every time you change settings within fsx, it will default back to 4.5, so you must either reset it in the fsx.cfg every time manually or only make display adjustments in the fsx.cfg.

Depends on which OS you use.

.cfg is also a hidden file, so make sure you set your folder settings to see hidden files.

Okay, so I just tried increasing LOD_Terrain from 4.5 to 8.5 and saw absolutely no difference.

I would like to increase the radius of the loaded high detail auto-gen terrain. Any other ideas?

I am looking at this video:

How does he get the night-time street lights and terrain to load up over such a long distance?

My settings are on highest. I tried increasing LOD_Radius but that did absolutely nothing.

Someone, please help me out here before I start pulling my hair out! :-(

Looking at that vid i would say he is using a lod_radius tweak along with Ultimate Terrain X which is a payware scenery addon that enhances night textures etc..

Just to be sure - after editing and saving the "fsx.cfg" file found deep in the heart of your windows system files - you didn't make ANY changes to the fsx settings within the sim before starting your flight?

As said before, ANY change made in the sim and after the cfg edit - even if you just increase the traffic bar a percent - it will reset the LOD_Radius back to default 4.5.

Also, is it fsx's default terrain that's still blurry or is it just areas with scenery add-ons?
