DDS editor to edit the textures directly? I don't know of one but I'm new...

Here's a DDS manipulator I found but it's from 2004 but seems to work with FSX because I've used it for my repaints:

paint.net can read DDS files but wont work with photoshop files. Its free and it allows you to edit the image in layers so you can put things on top or under each other and make them more transparent or visible. wont work on some aircraft without converting.

below is my aircraft repaint gallery all the aircraft in the gallery were repainted by myself.

I used paint.net in all of my aircraft painting projects at some point because it makes them look better.

im using the abacus repaint v2 to convert the encrypted bmp, dds and images and then i just copy and paste them into paint.net to do my brushing. then later just pop them back in repaint to view my work. simples

"Convimx" is super. Very simple and effective. It converts textures to other formats. Just be sure to install "Dxtbmp" also.
