Default Forum stats: Did you know...

As Rick, Nels, Darrell and the team integrate the FS.com software to a single log on, I thought I'd just have a look at the forums statistics, to see what sort of a job they're up against. It's not fun...

Some serious data moving to be done there - FS.com deserve a round of applause for managing that lot.

But then this statistic got me thinking:

    Active Members: 4,368

Active members? So I wonder what that is? So I took a closer look at the stats - and it turns out that 18,691 of FS.com members have never posted. That's just under half of all members. Wow!

What do you think this tells us? Do you think it's down to 'lurkers'? Do you register an account to lurk at other sites? I'm genuinely intrigued as to why there's so many accounts with no posts - did some sub-forums get deleted or something? Does anyone know?

Those are impressive numbers and yes I reckon there are a lot of lurkers on every forum.

Some stats from a UK based classic VW forum I belong to:

    Threads: 331,453, Posts: 4,112,861, Members: 48,802

About 3 quarters of those members are active, online right now are 566 users. That place takes some moderating I can tell you (I'm not a mod btw, wouldn't want that job) as there is a chat/discussion forum where pretty much any topic is allowed and some threads often turn into a keyboard warrior fest.

The last upgrade saw a lot of people having to re register because they didn't update their details, meaning that their old accounts could no longer be used.

Take this stalwart of the flightsim.com forums.

24258 posts under the old forum system.

11752 posts under the new forum system.

    http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/member.php?u=28697

    Over 36000 posts in total.

Could this be the reason we see so many so called lurkers. Just a thought.

That might be it. I didn't know the software had been changed from vBulletin in the past.

Just a bit of clarification here: The upgrade/changes rests solely with Nels and Rick. The rest of us are simply along for the ride.

Oh, don't belittle yourself - it says 'Super Moderator' for a reason, I guess...
