Thread: Windows 7 vs Windows XP for FSX

  1. Default Windows 7 vs Windows XP for FSX

    Hi all,

I have a duo-core 6700 machine that got infected badly, so I am forced to format the hard drive and reinstall the OS. I got the machine few days before Vista so I have the XP disks, but I was thinking should I go to Windows 7.

Since this is my 'flying' machine I am mostly concerned with the way FSX interacts with the OS. I have a good graphics card, I will install a Raptor HD, and the game worked fine on fairly high settings in the XP environment.

What is your experience with Windows 7 - would it help me squeeze some extra performance from the system or should I just stick to what I know works and reinstall XP?

Thank you, for your lightning fast responses...

These posts are getting more and more common like the "Which ones? FS9 or FSX????"

Just had to say that after the day I had.

Seriously though, do your research for your machine and find out what works best. I use Vista 32, Home Premium, no issues at all with FSX, and runs nice and smooth...

I have Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit and it runs FSX perfectly.
    No problems anywhere.

    I highly recommend Windows 7.

Windows 7 64 bit - It has been a total rollercoaster. It ran FSX perfectly on one install - terrible on a second and okay on a third install on the same machine and hardware. (harddrive crashed on the first install after running like a dream for a month or so or I would never had done the other two.) The the "run like a dream" install gained me about 5fps on my XP32 install.

I have not determined the change from one to the next but from what I have read on this forum it seems to have different results machine to machine. Ragtop Johnny's advice seems sound.

And if the Windows 7 runs well for you - you will like it. Its a great OS.

I am currently not happy with W7 and FSX, but another consideration is the newer games coming out that will use Dx11.
