Default Is it worth getting UTX for regions you're not familiar with (why not just GEX of FSc

Planning to get UTX and GEX for Europe so that the region I'm familiar with is recognizable. I would like better textures for the rest of the world, so thinking about getting UTX and GEX for US and Canada (and maybe FTX for Australia money permitting), and the FScene product for the rest of the world, but I'm wondering that since I'm blissfully ignorant of where roads/buildings/green fields should be in other countries (except for a couple of cities in the Americas that I've lived in briefly) - would UTX be a waste of money?

    I believe not!

I have GEX and UTX for US/CA/EU and REX. They make for a visually outstanding experience.

Negative, get UTX for everywhere you might fly.

Even though you're not familiar with the cities and scenery below, the
improvement that UTX and GEX brings to FSX is far, far better than the
boring old sandy looking Earth of the default scenery.

Thanks but I'm talking about having just GEX (without UTX) for areas I don't know. Won't GEX on its own sort out the default FSX sandy scenery?

    No! Not properly anyway.

With UTX - places all roads, rivers, coastlines where they should be - you can navigate a GA using a road map and not get lost

I have it for Europe AND the US and Canada.............

Occasionally I will fly low and slow with a Cessna or other such GA and use a road map for the area I wish to explore.

It's nice to go back to Canada and/or the USA where I have taken holidays and fly the areas I visited.

UTX Europe it is so up-to-date that a recent new road improvement near my home is there in all its glory

UTX is a landclass package. FSX comes loaded with some landclass data already from satalite and other data they collected or paid for. Landclass is what the scenery tiles below you are. Rock. Grass. Low density population. High Density Population and stuff like that as well as Vector stuff like ROADS and RIVERS.

Depending on where you fly, FSX had good detail in some areas to completely missing EVERYTHING other than the shape of the gound in others.

GEX is a high def texture replacement package and skins the landclass it is told to. So. The landlcass below is rock. Ok. FSX calls for rock texture. Either the default FSX texture is used or GEX if you have it installed.

UTX is more important than GEX in my opinion and I will explain why.

I bought GEX first not understanding this. I fly out of Calgary Alberta where I live and follow the highway out of town towards Cochrane Alberta and it is not even there. Keep on going and look for Canmore Alberta and then up into Banff. Nothing. Nada. Where'd everybody go? Hell! Half the rivers my Google Earth Map (Plan G and it is FREE) are not showing and most of the roads are missing. No VFR for me! Where the hell is everything!!! Hahaha. The rivers that are there look like they were drawn with straight edge rulers or lego blocks on the ground. No contours!

Gex only changed what the default "looked" like. The farmland is a little high res perhaps and a different color. Some of the houses in my city lined up a little different. So on and so fourth. Esthetically a little nicer but still WRONG.

Installed UTX Canada and I fly around Alberta and the Rockies from which I am familair with intamately and BLAMMO! There's all the little towns and hamlets and roads and rivers and lakes all right exactly where they belong. Almost like flying over Google Earth.

So. If you want the earth below to have stuff where it really belongs based on satalite? Get UTX!!!

Before GEX I would then get REX 2.0. It makes the water look more realistic as well as the clouds and sky and it makes the runway and taxiway textures higher definition and more realistic too.

Then. If you are not happy. Get GEX.

Sorry. Just my opionin. I like GEX but knowing what I know now it would be this order and this order only...

    FSX Gold.
UTX for my region and other regions I might fly.
    REX 2.0
Detailed area scenery like AU Blue Demo for Tasmania and Tongass X and Victoria + for FSX and the soon to be released PNW from FTX!

Then perhaps later GEX. But if the funds allow, just get it with UTX and don't look back. It is still a nice product.

    My 2 cents.

    Charles.

And I am not saying GEX was not worth it. It combines well with UTX and the devs hold hands alot and have worked to make GEX play nice and actually "enhance" UTX. Although let it be said that it is a matter of preference as to GEX looking better than FSX default textures.

If a person did not have GEX and installed UTX they would be happy and not know better. Some might install GEX and say ... Looks good but I would not have died without it.

UTX is a must for flying under 10,000 though. Hands down.

    Thanks Charles,

You gave a really helpful answer, now I know exactly which order to get things (will be UTX Europe before anything else).

    Cheers,
