Thread: "High and hot" in FS9

  1. Default "High and hot" in FS9

Have had FS9 for 5 years and just yesterday tried my first take-off at a high and hot airport, Johannesburg. Seems that the simulator does in fact simulate the high and hot implications on an A346's ability to get airborne. Used a CLS A346. Usually these will take off quite easily. But I need almost 50seconds to get airborne. You learn something new everyday as to just how great this game is.

is set up for those mean high density altitude days as is Denver.

What is interesting is to look at Chicago Midway:

This is not high but on a hot day jetliners sometimes have to limit their fuel, cargo, and passenger loads for the short runways. Think Southwest Airlines and formerly AirTran. Likewise any snow or standing water which increases take-off roll also can mean load limiting. A really cold day is a bonus here.

Try a heavier non-turbo here at KCUT Custer County in South Dakota on a hot day. Diagram attached. You can site see around the Black Hills monument.

ill never forget my first really dramatic demonstration of density altitude. working on my commercial in 1972, early winter. took off from denver in a 172. quite warm for that time of year, and of course very high field elevation. flew to kansas city, where it was far colder and of course the airport is far lower. had only just finished my private and had never shot an approach at such a low density altitude. i thought i was flying through glue!
thought id have to get out and jump up and down on the wings to get the airplane to descend! it far exceeded my expectations of what the change would do.

Try taking off the default C-172 from KLXV with the daytime temp set in the high 80s F.

If you really want to try flying at the highest altitudes for an airport, try out a place called Qamdo Bangda Airport. ICAO is ZUBD. That airport is the highest in the world at 14,219 ft. Every other high altitude airport pales in comparison to that one. This place is in Tibet, land of the Himalayas.

I also want to mention the scenery isn't a part of the default FS9. So you'd have to get them in the file library. Just do a search for Tibet, and it will get you the proper scenery for that.
