We demanded that the next version of FS be able to switch runways when the winds changed. Something FS2004 would only do if there were no aircraft incoming or near takeoff.
So MS gave us what we wanted.
Unfortunately the implementation was not optimal.
Once an AI aircraft is assigned to a runway - that is the runway it uses. Even if the winds change and other aircraft are assigned to the opposite end of that runway. The only time I've seen FSX change the landing runway assignment of an AI aircraft was after a missed approach. I've never seen it change the runway assignment of takeoff aircraft. Which some places leads to two aircraft taking off from opposite ends of the same runway at the same time.
Mostly we see this on the start of a flight session, but when you fly into an area, the weather bubble you bring with you is used by the AI engine to make the initial runway assignments as the airport loads. Then your weather updates and the runways in use are the other direction.
I have been able to request an alternate runway at times so that I could change to the runway end the ground traffic was using. It doesn't work perfectly all the time.
Like the time I was coming in for a TNG at KAFW - real world - and at about 100 ft AGL - the tower told me two watch for the two USAF T-38s landing on the opposite end of the parallel runway - and asked me if I wanted to go around. My instructor was less than pleased and not diplomatic in his reply to ATC.
