Thread: FSX and REX

    Default FSX and REX

I just saw some screenshots of Real Enviornment X and WOW! Im getting it with my next paycheck for sure
My questions is how much does it effect performance? Does it slow down your system noticeably or did most of you who have it not notice any difference? Im just thinking anything that looks that good must strain the system

ohh and do I have to get REX 1 and REX 2 or does REX2 cover it all?

It doesn't slow down performance as it changes the way it displays lighting effects and clouds. It displays photo imagery which doesn't use as much video card resources.

It is my favorite FSX addon and I highly recommend it. Make sure you have a good internet connection if you download it as it will take a few hours to receive all the files.

REX 2.0 will cover it all....

Just curious how does the autogen sit on top of the scenery imagery?
ANd how do you confirm detailed photo imagery is better on resources than textures?
    Just really curious!!

It doesn't do anything with Autogen or ground textures. It replaces Clouds, Sun, Water, runway and taxiway textures. It leaves alone scenery files and autogen.

Another consideration is REX and Tileproxy. This way you are using ground photo scenery with REX and disabling Autogen for a good performance boost and a very realistic looking environment.

Check out John's latest shots in the screenshots forum for some REX and Tileproxy used together:

UMM.... not sure why but those screen shots you posted look terrible compared to the screen shots on the REX website. maybe cause those you posted are FS2004 and not FSX?

Anyway when you download REX do you later have to put all the files in the appropriate folders like you do when you addon aircraft or does the program automatically do it for you?

REX has an installer and a user interface to set your texture themes. Their are various themes to choose from. It is very straight forward and installs the textures for you.

REX also replaces the default FSX weather server with its own that is updated over distance rather then time. You can still use the default FSX weather if you choose and the default FSX weather will use REX cloud textures.

Only thing I wish the interface had was a way to let me change an individual piece like clouds without resorting to enabling or disabling items in the OPTIONS screen and then reloading themes.

Just simply say... Load this sun.... 10 seconds later. Sun loaded. Thanks. Go fly now and check it out!

Otherwise. Ya. Rex combined with a landclass product like UTX makes FS X into FS2011.

"It doesn't slow down performance as it changes the way it displays lighting effects and clouds. It displays photo imagery which doesn't use as much video card resources."

I have to take a more conservative point of view here and say that REX certainly can effect your system performance, but most users are not effected.

It is true that REX changes cloud and water texture files and that in-and-of itself isn't a performance grabber, but REX can (*and for best results, recommends) using their vastly improved high-resolution cloud files. Whether they were artistically illustrated or photoreal images, a texture is a texture and still needs to be loaded - the photoreal aspect in and of itself is not a factor... just the resolution is.

These higher resolution cloud files DO place a larger burden on the computer as it relates to texture memory usage. Most systems will probably skate by with no problems, but when increasing the texture resolutions in the clouds, you do run the risk for slowing down a system - especially if it is lacking in memory or is a mediocre system to begin with.

That said, REX gives you the ability to configure what cloud resolution you'd like to use... anywhere from very high resolution for best visuals, to resolutions LOWER than the default FSX clouds, for best performance.

Don't let this stop your purchase, as even at lower resolutions the cloud textures are superior to defaults... and there's more to REX than just the clouds!
