Thread: Terrain Loading Hang 33%

  1. #1

    Default Terrain Loading Hang 33%

Very recently put together a brand new custom PC (see specs below) and did a fresh FSX/Acceleration install (No custom scenery/textures/aircraft). When selecting Free Flight, in any area and with any aircraft, I get a hang on texture loading anywhere between 33% (most common) and 49%. This will stay stuck for several (read, 10) minutes before finally loading completely.

Searched the forums and have tried deleting both my logbook.BIN and fsx.cfg in the users/documents/FSX folder and letting FSX rebuild. No Dice! Defragmented without help as well. I emphasize that this is a clean system without clutter or add-ons. OS is on one of the SSDs and FSX is on the other.

    Any Help?

My settings within the game are as follows:
    1920X1200 (32)
    Global Texture resolutions VERY HIGH
    DirectX10 Preview ON
    AntiAliasing ON
    ANISOTROPIC FILTERING ON
    LOD radius Medium
    Mesh Compl. 75
    Mesh Res. 38
    Texture Res 1
    Water Effects Max
    Scenery Complex. Dense
    Autogen Dense
Weather and traffic settings are minimal.

    Computer Specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64
    Intel i7 Extreme 3.33GHz CPU
    ABS Canyon 695 Case
EVGA X58 3X SLI Classified HydroCopper MOBO
    Koolance EXOS Water Cooling
    Silverstone 1500W PSU
    12GB Corsair DDR3 1600 RAM
    2 X EVGA Nvidia 295GTX HydroCopper GPUs
    2 X Intel X-25M G2 160GB SSDs
    WD Velociraptor 300GB
    Creative X-Fi Elite Pro
    Saitek X52/ProFlight Yoke/Rudders

    Thanks in advance!

My scenery loading sometimes hangs at 33% but never for more than a minute, and at other times it hangs at other percentages, but never for more than a minute there too.
Scenery graphics settings definitely have an effect, for example very dense will cause longer delays than sparser settings.

    My machine-
    WinXP Home
    Intel core2 E8600@3.33Ghz
    3 Gb RAM
    Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX 512Mb

Also of note - my previous machine, which was not as robust as my current, would load without hanging with similar graphics settings.

That system was a Vista 32, quad core with two Nvidia 8800 Ultras and 8GB RAM. Game was loaded on a WD Raptor.

I've just been very surprised that my newer system which is far superior to the old one has been loading much MUCH slower and with more difficulties than my older system.

There must be a setting causing a problem during load. I've even thought about a complete re-install, but wanted to save that as a last resort.

Start with the lowest graphics settings and see if there's any hanging.
Also toggle on/off some of the mysterious buttons such as 'bi-linear', 'anti-aliasing' etc to see if they have any effect.

Ok, so I turned everything OFF and put all the sliders to minimum.

Free Flight default - now hangs at 34%, and once at 35%.

    what's next?

There's nothing wonky about having FSX installed on a non-system hard drive, is there? Can't imagine there would be, but just trying to brainstorm through this thing, and in any brainstorm session, I'm instantly handicapped!

I'm not very PC-literate, but i know FSX has always been a slow loader anyway, for example it takes almost a minute just to boot up on my system, then another full minute to load in a selected flight.
Yours takes 10 minutes which is a bit of a drag, but at least it does load eventually so it's not as bad as if it won't load at all.
Meanwhile keep asking around this forum and others for advice on how to lower the 10 mins to a more acceptable figure, i've run out of ideas because basically I only know how to waggle the joystick to make my little planes go wheeee!

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

Suppose I'll try an uninstall and clean install. I'll install the game to the system drive this time around to see if that makes a difference.

Going to do it....right now....unless someone stops me with something else to try...

    Ok, I'm really doing it...

    I mean it...

Meanwhile see if you can pick up any clues from this thread-
