Thread: Computer for FSX

    Default Computer for FSX

I have upgraded to Flight Simulator X standard. I have been speaking to a few people and told me that a quad core was the best opition. Please follow the link below and have a look at the computers on here that are under £350 and tell me which one(s) would run fsx without lagging with loads of add-ons.

    link: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_trkpa...4&_sop=2&_sc=1

If you look where it says Best Match, Change that to price: Lowest first so it is easier to find one's under £350.

I don't mind it having some lagging but not loads like the computer i have now which it was so bad i uninstalled it stright away,

    Thanks

I think the true answer is even a quad core might lag with high density add-ons.
If it helps I have a Dell XPS 2.4 quad core with 8200GT, 3 gig ram, Raid 0.
This runs most add-ons very well but I can't max all the sliders.
Expect 25+ in most areas. VFR London and the Realair Spitfire with sliders pretty high and I get 6fps.

Having said that my system is a good one for FSX. I don't think there is a system yet that will allow high fps and all sliders maxed.

For acceptable FSX performance, you need a system with the following hardware basics:

An Intel CPU. Some examples would be: Core 2 Duo E8400/E8500/E8600, Core 2 Quad Q9550/Q9650 or Core i7 860/920/940.

    4GB of system RAM.

A mid-range video card at least at the level of the Nvidia GTS250.

In the list you linked to, I could not find a system priced around £350 having any combination of the components I listed above.

Do you have local computer store? If you do, I suggest you ask them to custom build a system for you using some combination of the components I listed.
Barring that, check other online sources as the prices shown in your link look quite high (or perhaps I'm just not familiar with UK pricing).
What about building your own system? All you do is buy the required components and put it together by following one of the many excellent guides available on the in the internet. It really isn't as difficult as you may think.

At the same clock speed, yes the quad will be better. However, a faster dual core will run the sim better than a slower quad core. The best performing systesm have speeds over 3GHz, with the best having speeds as close to 4GHz as possible.

£350 doesn't get you much in computing terms, and certainly not anything that's going to be happy with FSX. If that's the limit of your budget, you'd probably be happier with FS9.

    Now with extra BLOGiness!

The I7920 is a creat chip for overclocking if you get the right board. I second having a system built from scratch from a local shop. Not sure what you are using now but you may be able to part out your system and reuse many of the component on the new system to save money. Double that 350 and you will be in the ballpark for something nice.

You will be pleased with the machine if it can achieve 20 fps consistently...flying anywhere, in any plane.

Default Nicely capable system for $589 US

I have to disagree with some of the advice you have been receiving here.

I just spent five minutes on the TigerDirect (US) web site and put together a very good FSX system for about $580 (US). The case & powersupply are generic, the components are less than state of the art, and you'll use onboard sound - but I am sure they will deliver very acceptable FSX performance.

    $30 PowerMax case & 430 watt PS
    $184 MSI motherboard & Intel E7500 processor
    $100 DDR2 PC6400 memory (4GB)
    $100 GT250 class PCIE 2.0 video card
    $ 70 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive
    $105 XP or VISTA

My FSX system is an Intel E6600 (OC'd to 3.1 Hz) with 4GB DDR2 memory and a 8800GTS (640 MB) video card. I consistently get 20 - 30 fps in all except the most scenery intense settings. I run with scenery options close to max in 1600x1050x32 mode with AA & Anisotropic settings to max. I also run two monitors. My only concession to a slow CPU is I run little AI traffic of any kind.

The E7500 is about 30% faster than my E6600 and the GTS 250 class video card will generate about 50% more frames per second than will my 8800 GTS.

Building your own system is just a matter of plugging the pieces together. There are many WEB based video tutorials that walk you through it.

I am sure you can find similar UK based deals.
