Before i go out and buy all the gear. Im wondering if this is the right gear for flight sim.
with the cooling im not sure about yet as im unable to find the prices on computer alliance for the cooling.
Will i be getting a good deal with this store or should i look elsewhere.

also would i be better off getting the Gigabyte GTX 285 1GB PCIe Video Card GTX285 over Leadtek nVidia Quadro FX580 PCIe Video Card
    your opinions?

Well that sounds like a pretty class PC. You can probably expect some very nice frame rates. And if you can, you should overclock that i7 a bit.

Never heard of the graphics card in it, but the GTX285 is a very good card. But you must remember FSX is more CPU dependant that GPU.

    I reckon that's not a bad deal.

But don't you dare get Vista, even if it is the Ultimate. It is the worst OS I have ever used. I have had about 20 blue screens in the first month (Google it). Vista consumes to much resources. Windows 7, however, is like a supercharged XP (which was the best OS). The price isn't too different.

    Good luck

I reckon your FSX experience will be improved greatly with both XP and the GTX285, good luck.

Looks great, but why were you considering the Quadro in the first place? It's a workstation card designed for accelerating CAD work, not gaming.

No motherboard is manufactured to work with any particular video card model. In the case of the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R, it has two PCI Express slots which makes it compatible with PCI Express video cards from Nvidia and Ati. As for your choice of the GTX285, you don't really need a card at that level to run FSX well. FSX is more dependent upon processing power so really, when it comes to FSX graphics, something like a GTS250, or a GTX260, for example would be fine for FSX and save you a few bucks at the same time.

Your list looks good. I would advise getting Vista 64 bit with an upgrade to Win 7 64 bit if you purchase the parts before Oct. 22. If you get your parts after the 22nd then get Win 7 64 bit. FSX can have out of memory errors on a 32 bit operating system if/when you begin to add third party FSX software (scenery, aircraft, utilities). A 64 bit Operating system allows more memory use by programs that are flagged for it (FSX sp2/Acceleration/Gold is) and will allow all RAM to be recognized and used.

XP, while a good operating system for it's day, is at it's end. If you plan on using newer features for games and software (DX10, 11 and onward) and want a more robust security system Vista/Win 7 is recommended. The early Vista 'problems' have been fixed for awhile now, with the Win 7 release adding more GUI features and subtle performance improvements. For FSX performance 64 bit Vista or Win7 is a better choice than XP or XP64 in my opinion and experience.

For CPU cooling, if you plan on overclocking, I recommend the ThermalRight Ultra 120 Extreme (1366 socket and will fit in your case) for proven CPU overclock air cooling. Beware of look-a-likes and knockoffs that look similar but because of design perform poorly. If you do not plan on overclocking or perhaps a mild overclock to around 3.0 - 3.3GHz the stock fan that comes with a retail version of the i7 920 will suffice.

Definitely go for Vista or Win7 64 bit editions. I have never had BSOD problems with Vista outside of overclocking or a bad motherboard. And while it look like is uses far more resources when idle, most of this is because it is using RAM as a cache to load programs faster. If a program needs the memory, Vista/Win7 will free it up.

I would hold off on the build until W7 64 is released (just a couple weeks), then buy a proper, full version of the OS. Unless I'm missing something, I find it incomprehensible installinging Vista - then having to upgrade it to W7, every time I needed to format or upgrade my system in the future. Especially when I would just have needed to wait a few days to get W7 full.
