Thread: Offset ILS?

    Default Offset ILS?

So last night, I was flying into KPDX, showing a friend how the autoland function worked on the Boeing 747-400. As I put it on autoland, it indicated that I was lined up with the runway, but looking out the window, I could see that it wasn't. I went around and attempted it again, but ended up having to land manually because I was still not lined up with the runway. Today, I was test flying his Boeing 777-200ER into KDBQ, and as I was landing on runway 36, I had the same problem with the ILS not being lined up. I checked the AFCADS, and for runway 28L at KPDX and runway 36 at KDBQ, both ILS systems were not aligned. I had not made any modifications to either airport, and according to AFCAD, that's how the stock airports were. Can anybody clarify that the default scenery does that for those ILS systems at those airports UNMODIFIED? I've looked at the ILS systems for KSEA, KLAS, and even runway 28R at KPDX, and those ILS systems looked all right to me.

I had that prob coming into KGEG's Runway 3; I wasn't in line, despite the correct frequency and indicated line-up. After that I'd dial in the runway's heading into the HDG of the autopilot during approach and that solved it. That's just my experience, though.

This file may solve your Portland problem:

    http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php...fcd&DLID=41972

It did for me. For the default Portland airport that is.

I do not use it anymore since I purchased the magnificant Portland package from Flight1.

Get flightsim or avsim freeware for AFCAD 2.21. You can edit ILS or freq change etc...

In FS9, KPDX localizer JMJ is not set to the correct bearing (should be 299.03). Note, though, that you can't always assume that a Cat I localizer is aligned with the runway centerline. In some cases it will be sited so that when centered on the localizer, the track of the aircraft is brought across the centerline, requiring the pilot to leave the localizer and align visually with the runway.

How does one know if it's a CAT I localizer?

The approach chart will have CAT II or CAT III type ILS but CAT I is understood as the least precise (highest minimums) ILS type approach (Localizer + GS).

Since Runway 28L is a ILS (no CAT listed) it is understood as a CAT I. A runway can have all 3 CAT approaches such as Runway 10R at PDX.

ILS or Localizer RWY 10L (CAT I understood)
    ILS RWY 10R (CAT II)
    ILS RWY 10R (CAT III)

FS has no designation for the type of ILS. if you want to 'fly real' look at a real-world chart and follow the type & minimums outlined.

Both FS9 and FSX designates CAT classifications. AFCAD shows what CAT is in the NAVAID list (comes from the runway XML property)

ADE9X has a drop down menu for both the CAT II and CAT III (CAT I is understood).

This is the default stock XML RWY 10R at PDX.

In FS it is up to the User Pilot to simulate that they are flying a certified CAT IIIb type airplane to minimums and hold all the proper Pilot documents.

You can also determine the CAT rating of a RW in map view by zooming all the way in and hovering the mouse over the runway.
