Thread: How is it I have Dual Channel Memory with Incorrect Configuration?

Default How is it I have Dual Channel Memory with Incorrect Configuration?

    Channel A DIMM 0 - 256mb
    Channel A DIMM 1 - 512mb

    Channel B DIMM 0 - 256mb
    Channel B DIMM 1 - Empty

According to page 37 of the manual, this should result in single channel memory operation (Intel D915GAG motherboard)

CPU-Z tells me I'm running in Dual. Can this be fooled somehow?

I've been trying to track down the cause of a "Page Fault in Non Paged Area" blue screen (Stop: 0x00000050 (etc, etc, etc, etc)

Each channel must have the same amount of memory. In your case you need to move the 512MB module to Channel B and put both 256MB modules in Channel A.

I will definitely do that, but should this odd configuration report as Dual?

    On my mobo it is:

    A: 2 Gb
    B: empty

    A: 2 Gb
    B: empty

With matched pairs of DIMMs in the "A" slots. Then matched pairs in the "B" slots (if any) for the dual channel setup.

You look to have the "A" slots filled with matched 256 MB DIMMs so it tries for dual but then you have that extra 512 MB unmatched DIMM stuck in there throwing it off.

Check your motherboard manual to find out the proper setup for the memory you have.

Some older motherboards require the largest DIMMs to go in first with smaller ones in the later slots. If you install the smaller ones first on those, any later, larger DIMMs will report the same size as the smallest previous DIMM installed.

You probably don't need to worry about that though.

His motherboard manual says it should be fine to run with 2x256MB in one channel with 1x512MB in the other. Basically as long as the amount in each channel matches.

That isn't what he was asking about though (I didn't read it properly myself either )

    ske,

Does your BIOS say it's running in dual channel mode when you start up? It is possible that CPU-Z is not reading something correctly. It may be getting confused with more recent Intel motherboards that support limited dual channel modes with mis-matched RAM module sizes.

I forgot to check the BIOS before switching to the right configuration!
But it is now installed correctly.
