Default What do you think of what I just ordered?

Based on recommendations found on here, the Tiger Direct website, the tech, and my own research this is what I have ordered. I've never built before, so this should be an adventure.

    Intel Core I7 920 processor 2.66 Ghz
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Mother Board
    Corsair I7 Dominator DDR3 1600 MHz 6 Gigs
Kingwin Mach 1 800 watt Quad, SLI rated Powersupply

Thermaltake Element S ATX Black Mid-T Case (supposed to be really quite and very cold with two giant fans and two small {added those})

    Ultra Four channel fan controler
    Lite-On Blue-Ray, DVD,CD writer
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB Hard Drive Bundle With Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit DSP
    BFG GeForce 9800 GTX + OC Video Card - 512MB GDDR3

I am salvaging my TV card and my 500 gig hard drive from my old CPU

The guy said it would beat anything up to about a $3,000 system. What do you think? Give me honest feed back now. Don't be afraid to criticize.
Is there any videos anywhere of how to actually put one together, or a book?

I'd change the graphic card, perhaps a GTX280.

    Enjoy.

EDIT: Just to qualify that, FSX and FS9 are not GPU hogs, but if you run a large screen LCD, then more GPU memory than 512MB would be advantageous, also with talk of a new sim from Aerosoft, or indeed if you play more than just FS, then a more modern GPU would give more longevity.

Also, building your own PC is easy, if you can plug an electrical device into the wall socket then you can build your own PC, its the tweaking of parts and OS that takes skill, just had a look on You Tube and there a gazillion videos that offer first user advice on how to put together your first PC.

    Enjoy

Hay thanks a lot. My screen is not a really huge screen and it's older, even though it's LCD. It uses one of those adapters (I forget what they call it). I know that in a year or so it'll be something to add, perhaps sooner, but this term my budget was limited and my current system is breaking down. I am getting the Blue Screen of Death every couple of days and it's been cleaned, so it's not long for this world. I had my Dell for like 5-6 years and this Gateway isn't three yet. I'll never buy Gateway again. It's darn loud too.

Bill, your choices are very similar to the system I just ordered myself, other than a couple of minor variances so I would like to compare notes with you once the systems are up and running. I am using FSX/REX/GEX/UTX and TrafficX plus numerous addon aircraft(CaptainSim C-130,A2A Sim P-47 with the accusim expansion,Wilco CitationX several Carenado birds etc.). I plan on O/Cing the CPU to @ 3.8-4.0 GHz and see if I can get decent FPS. that way, after using an AMD system for such a long time, this will be a kind of learn as I go situation! My system should arrive around the 10th of June (They said it could be sooner depending on how busy the shop is) so keep us posted and I'll do the same.Thanx,Gary

Great for you! I read your thread and took some ideas for research from it. Someone commented on the card and I do know there are better ones to be had, but the board supports three and I asked the guy if the system as put together would run FSX and he said it would put a hurting on it, so I figured I'll add today's high in cards when tomorrow's high end cards come out. He said I should be able to run Crisis which from what I Googled is pretty intense. I'll be happy to do FSX and World in Conflict.

As far as over clocking, do you do that with a program or something? Is there a guide somewhere? I know I'd need a better CPU cooler than what comes with it, but I can always pick one up. Truthfully I think your system will run fine as is.

Your system looks to be pretty good. The only thing I would change is the power supply because I am unfamiliar with that company and perhaps 2000MHz DD3 RAM. The 9800 video will be just fine for FSX and WiC.

You should reconsider the heatsink, I almost guarantee you will want to overclock your i7 920 once you have your initial build done. You will be able to do a mild overclock with the existing stock Intel heatsink/fan but once you do that and see how easy it is you will most likely want more, and FSX will certainly use it. Now here is the problem, most quality heatsinks designed for air cooled overclocking come with a back plate that is used to bolt the heatsink to the motherboard. If you intend to replace the Intel CPU HS/fan later this means you will have to completely dis-assemble the computer in order to pull the motherboard and install the new HS/Fan with the back plate. This is all easier done when you are first building the system.

You overclock by changing certain settings in the BIOS which is accessed via a hotkey (Del in your new mobo's case) at boot up.

Ahh HA! Here is where I thought ahead. The case has a hole in the side to access the back plate. Pretty good Idea if you ask me. If you can imagine a inner shell with a cutout then the outer case which comes off to reach the hole in the inner shell.
