    Default Need help transferring data

I will soon be attempting to transfer data from my old computer (Windows XP) to new computer (Vista 64-bit).

I have never done this before.

    Any advice is appreciated.

I am especially concerned about email addess (Earthlink), favorites and games.

I will be upgrading from FS9 to FSX, but not transfering FS9.

    Thanks,

Vista includes a program for this called Windows Easy transfer.

It may not work well for games that store the saved game files in the Program and Files folder. These you will probably have to transfer manually over a network or by burning to CD. Once you install the game on the new system, just copy the save game files back to the saved game folder.

One of the biggest things to do is keep the old computer handy for a week or two until you are sure you have everything. Don't reformat or wipe it clean until you are absolutely sure you have everything.

I recently built a new system with Vista 64 as the OS and ended up installing my old XP drive as a second HD. It is my intention to transfer what will work in Vista 64 to the new 10K RPM Velociraptor and leave what will not on the XP drive in a dual boot setup. http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=196328

As part of the process, I reinstalled FS9 on the new drive and copied my old aircraft, gauge and scenery folders into it. Some of the non-default aircraft return error 15 or a message that a gauge file cannot be found or opened. I am not at home to check it, but it has occurred to me that this may be a permissions issue in Vista, since the copied files are "foreign". Does anybody know if that is likely to be the case? The default aircraft all seem fine.

Now that FSX is also installed and running on the new Vista drive, it will not uninstall from the old XP drive. What's with that?

Finally, once everything that I intend to move over to the new drive is moved, I would like to do a thorough purge of junk files and clean up the registry on the old one. What is a good registry cleaner and how do we know?

I hope this is not taken as hijacking the thread, I am just sharing some of my experiences with a similar project.

    Default Laplink PCMover

PCMover will move your applications and settings. It will cost $49 or so. I have used it at work for a few months with good results.
