Thread: Flightsim Downloads

  1. Default Flightsim Downloads

    Hi all,

I have in the past downloaded aircraft files and most of them worked.
I usually download them to a folder, then extract them, and then copy and paste them straight into my FS9 aircraft folder. (In the past I have not copied aircraft to aircraft, scenery to scenery, guages to guages etc.)

I recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled FS2004. Since then every aircraft I have downloaded has not appeared on my aircraft menu in the game. (despite me doing what I did in the past with success)

I have recently found in all of my downloaded files a icon (which looks like a brown box) called .air which when double clicked says that the .air file is damaged.

I then deleted the adobe .air program from the pc and the funny icon does not appear anymore - but the aircraft still do not appear in my FS menu.

Guys, can someone please let me know where I am going wrong - it is probably something simple.

    Appreciate any help!

Is it possible what you have downloaded is an aircraft meant to be used as an AI aircraft only? Many of them are set not to display on the Aircraft Selection menu.

Can you provide the exact filename (?????.zip) of a sample aircraft which you do not see? One of us can then download it and see if we can spot the problem.

    Thanks for the response.

To be honest I am not too sure what an AI file is. Can you please explain.

Here are some of the files I have been downloading recently.

    Concall.zip
    falc.zip
    tu144v2.zip
    imppack.zip
    pc7astra.zip

    Any help???

AI (Artificial Intelligence) aircraft are planes which populate the airports and skies - they actually fly - to help create a sense of realism. You do not fly them, the FS2004 AI engine flies them.

Some of the default aircraft which come with FS2004 are used in this fashion when you have your Airline and/or GA (General Aviation) traffic enabled.

What Operating system are you usung - XP or Vista?

Many other AI aircraft are available for download also - and the file description will indicate if that is what the package is designed for. Such aircraft usually have considerably less detail so they do not impact frame rates too much.

I took a quick look at 3 (could not find the 4th) of the aircraft you mentioned and all are flyable models (not AI) and should display properly for you.

    Hello
The air file thingy you describe(i had this issue as well)comes from installing the latest version of Adobe Acrobat reader. It does not affect the way FS9 runs but is an irritant.I solved this problem with David's(OPA)help by uninstalling the Adobe reader and downloading 'foxit'(also free pdf reader)which opens quicker and scrolls much more smoothly than Adobe Acrobat. The brown AIR file installer thing also disappears when you uninstall AA .

Thanks chaps, I am running on XP.
I have had some luck with some of the aircraft files but some no matter how many times I install and copy the files, the aircraft are just not there afterwards.

If anyone is keen try and install the imppack.zip file, this is one I really want but cannot get it to work. If you can then by all means please let me know.

Just another thing, I intalled some scenery for Waterkloof and Swartkops airfields in south africa, when i try and position myself at these airfields it just crashes and sends me back out to windows - any ideas?????

Sorry, one last thing - I saw on this site you can also add in scenery such as groundcrew equip etc. but it requires something called EZ scenery (or something like that). I take it this is a package for designing your own airfields - is this part of FS 2004 or something one gets separately?

Much appreciate the help guys - happy flying!

I just downloaded and installed imppack.zip - no problems - this is what I did:

    1. Unzipped imppack.zip to a temporary folder.

    2. Manually copied the folders named Impala_MkI and Impala_MkII and pasted them into my Flight Simulator 9 aircraft subfolder.

    2. Manually copied the 20 texture files (bmp) and pasted them into my Flight Simulator 9 testure subfloder. They all start will the letters Imp so it will be easy to remove them later if I wish.

The aircraft show up in my Aircraft list under Atlas as the manufacturer.

    ---

In regard to the EZ question -the EZ object placer is a payware program which is available from Abacus. I personally prefer the Instant Scenery program from Flight1 as it is considerably more versatile.

Hope this helps a bit - no ideas regarding your other questions. (All aircraft you mentioned install properly for me)

you are installing aircraft right...the folder containing the 2 mkII planes just needs to be moved to the aircraft folder in FS9. you only need to work with scenery and texture with scenery...hope this helps

You may wish to reword what you just posted - it could be read that the folder which contains the two MK airplanes should be moved - when in reality it is the two folders (one named Impala_MkI and the other named Impala_MkII) which should be moved.

If the OP is moving the folder they are in (which is named aircraft) then they will not display.

The author of the package really did not make it very clear - especially to anyone who is not familiar with adding aircraft.

    Hello
Do you understand the business of 'activating' new scenery addons in FS9?
