Thread: I'm curious what does NDB mean? and what is a Offset LDA runway?

  1. Default I'm curious what does NDB mean? and what is a Offset LDA runway?

What does the NDB stand for? I know what they are used for just curious what NDB stands for.And I have a other question what is
a Offset LDA I'm curious about them I see them in some airports
and just wanted to know what they are.A airport I was flying
to had one and it had a ILS freg and ILS Hdg for Offset LDA.
The funny thing is that this airport has 2 to 3 runways and
none of them have any ILS info for them just the Offset LDA.

    Thanks for any information.

    Regards.

Hi, NDB is NON DIRECTIONAL BEACON. It sends out its signal in every direction. As for LDA, I'd like to know too. Cheers,Canada.

NDB works with ADF. It stands for Non-Directional Radio Beacon. If you are headed toward the NDB, your ADF needle should point straight up. I don't know what the offset LDA stands for, but I'm pretty sure it means the localizer is somewhere other than the runway, so it can serve multiple runways. For example you have 16L and 1000 ft to the right is 16R. That and offset LDA won't be accurate for either. IT may guide you to a landing spot directly in between two runways, so you'd miss the runway by 500 ft if following this LDA.

You have a pitot tube at the front of the aircraft that measures air pressure. As the speed increases, the pressure increases. The pitot tube therefore measures IAS. If it gets chilly, this can ice up, and get blocked. Your IAS reading is therefore up the creek. Pitot heat removes this possibility.

As for cowl flaps, someone else'll have to help I'm afraid.

Cowl flaps are used to increase the airflow for cooling on larger engines while on the ground and climbing. They are closed at altitude to prevent the engine from running too cool.

An offset LDA means that the localizer beam is not in direct line with the runway. Usually due to there being an obstruction in direct line with the runway like a building, hill, or tall tower, etc.
