As title. The first runway is 16/34 - what is the new runway then? And I suppose the original runway is still 16/34? Thank you!

I dont know?I was there a month ago and the new parallel runway is set to open this year sometime. So it could be something like 34R/16L and 34L/16R.I am not really sure because when i was there we landed on runway 34.

Sorry, I don't know either. My question is, why don't they just use Haneda? It's a lot closer to Tokyo than Narita is...

Haneda is now domestic now that Narita's new runway gives Narita the capacity to handle flights from Taiwan.

RJAA's new runway is also 16/34 so they are now both officially known as 34L and 34R and 16L and 16R. It is only about 7500 feet long and "as a general rule" will be used by all turboprops and "no 747's" as mentioned on the charts.
Kitty, If you need charts for Narita showing the new runway please let me know. Contact me at my email ACMilan99@aol.com.

I was going to ask this question last night, but Kitty's question hadn't been answered yet so I didn't feel it was courteous to tack on my related, but different query. It may be obvious to most, but I'm clueless on this one...
When it comes to numbering runways in general, do the numbers signify anything, or are the strips numbered on a whim?

The numbers are related to the direction and the letters are R=right L=left and C=center with parallel runways. If a runway is named 34, it faces almost North at about 340 (somewhere between 335 and 345) degrees. Conversely, 16 is about 160 degrees and faces south
