Remember if you will the famous song being sang by Frank Sinatra "New York~ New York" as you view these shots of the Lockheed STARLINER Constellation in the colors of TWA.
This majestic bird heralded a new era of speed and power. It was possible to fly safely on just (1) engine if needed during flight, according to Lockheed. The plane's ride was the smoothest of any aircraft of it's day! All of this advancement came with a price though; the aircraft proved expensive to maintain, and they spared no expense (the airline rebuilt/refitted almost the entire aircraft every 10,000hrs in their aircraft shop hangers in just 6-days time.) TWA was proud of it's Constellations, and it showed!
Not something we should be doing, but this shot of the aircraft flying over NYC looks amazing with the clouds & sunset beyond it.
The beautiful, sleek lines of this aerodynamic marvel are really evident in this picture. It's my personal favorite!
A truly stunning design, the Lockheed Constellation STARLINER was the most advanced and luxurious airplane of it's day. Here it is shown over New York City, with the Empire State Building clearly visible in the background.
Here is a video showcasing the sweet sound of the R3550 radial engines on the Constellation.
