Default plane doesnt seem to decelerate

i like to fly with ATC guidance, and most likely the plane will not pass the D area on the flightpath, as we know the D area is where the plane starts to decrease speed in preparation for approach, but in some cases such as flying with ATC guidance the plane will not pass the D..so i have to activate the approach phase on the FMGC, but still the plane doesnt slowdown, is there something i miss, when is the time we activate tha Approach phase?

    Is Autothrottle Engaged? Armed?
Try retarding the throttles and/or extending the speedbrake/spoilers some.
