Default God help me.. so frustrated.

Hi all. I just bought FSX Gold edition and have only had it for a few days now. My first FS ever and I am brand new to it all. Starting with zero knowledge and attempting to learn at my own pace through the FSX missions. I am having the most frustrating time though... For some reason about 80% of the time that I try to save my game while in a mission, either by pressing the semicolon key or the drop down menu, the windows hourglass pops up and the game completely locks up and freezes. Cant alt-tab out and cant reboot with ctrl-alt-del. THe other 20% of the time it just goes to the save screen with no issues at all. I have found that if I pause the game and then attempt to save it doesnt freeze as much, but still most of the time Being new to everything, I simply cant bet on completing missions without saving frequently, yet it seems I have no choice. I ran fsx deluxe a year or so ago on the same computer and don't remember this happening at all.

It makes the learning aspect so frustrating that I almost just gave up on it. If I set 2 hrs aside to play, I end up spending 1/2 that time waiting to see if the game unfreezes or sitting around while the computer restarts over and over.. is there a fix to this, or is this just me?

I am running win xp with 2 gigs ram and a 7800 gtx video card. I play tons of other new computer games on full video settings with no issue and this is the only program that ever freezes my computer to the point of no return.. Any ideas??

Thanks, I just want to be able to load the program and learn without all this distraction of not being able to load/save games.

There are a lot of things I like about FSX, but you might want to try the previous version ........ FS9/FS2004 Century of Flight, because it's more stable on a larger variety of computers.

Some people still use it, without changing to FSX.

What you describe with FSX hanging or crashing when selecting a menu item is a known issue with nVidia video card drivers. Make sure you therefore upgrade your video card drivers to the latest version.

I use the 169.25 nVidia drivers. No problems, Beautiful performance! If you do update your drivers, use Driver Cleaner Pro to erase all remnants of your old drivers out of the system. It will really help you out.

I have the same problem with the latest Nvidia drivers. The only fix that I've found was to put the game in "windowed" mode. It leaves that nasty bar at the top but that's better then the ctd's. "Thanks to several simmers here on this forum for that answer"!
But first try upgrading your driver first and cleaning the old one. Quite a few people have have much luck with that.

I had a nightmare of a time playing with the video drivers today. I downloaded the program recommended above and wish I hadn't. I do appreciate the help, but for me it couldn't have gone worse. I followed the directions in the readme file exactly and when I rebooted my computer for the final time I had been left with no sound and no internet and a super slow computer. And not having teh discs for my video card, motherboard, etc and no internet connection.. i was screwed. My motherboard has Nvidea chip on it so that program must have wiped that out as well when it was cleannign up the video drivers and left me helpless for hours.. My brother just happened to have the same motherboard with a cd and got me back on the internet. I seem to have permanently lost windows media player out of the deal, but I dont't care.. the computer is back with all updated drivers and the bugs I was experiencing haven't changed one bit... Oh well, it was an attempt and I thank you guys for the help.

ONe thing that I have been noticing that I need explained to me.. When I load FSX each time it seems to go back to default settings each time. I got my settings how I liked them as far as FPS, and realism settings go, and I saved a config file, yet any time I load the game it seems to go back to the easy realism setting and 15 fps.. I dont get it.. do I need to immediately load the config file every time i load FSX before playing?? I would have thought that with onely one config file saved that it would just load that each time and not make the player change settings each time.. I'm probably just missing something here.. Any help is appreciated as always. Thanks

The next time you load the game load the saved configuration once again, change the realism settings to what you want then go to Flights/Save and check the box "Make this the default flight." That's what determines how the game will load each time. You can have several configuration settings for various locations, as when flying rural vs. busy airports for example, but they're only temporary until you save the flight as the default.

I don't know if it would help much but it almost sounds like you may be having some kind of read/write issues with your harddrive. IE, the sim locks up or has issues upon trying to save info to that or other files as it sounds like its renewing the CFG file every time it starts which may be due to a corruption or issue in that file or some other file so it makes a new one.

You may try an error scan of the drive with the autofix boxes checked and see if that resolves this, and or also take a look at any programs you may have running in the background as they may be causing a conflict when the sim is writing this info and not allowing it to do so correctly.

    Hope that helps.

One thing to note, the above driver removal programs do work well but sometimes, for your hardware, the OS by default, may not have the native drivers needed to get them all backup and running again, I know this is the way it is for my nVidia chipset. So before you wipe them all out be sure to have the drivers you want or need downloaded and read to be installed when asked for before you wipe out any of the ones you have.

One other thing I would recommend - exit FSX normally after you make the save.

If the program crashes out - then all the changes you made are not saved because some are only written to the file during the normal FSX shutdown process.
