Thread: Question about a add-on plane download

Default Question about a add-on plane download

    Hi,

    I downloaded a add-on airplane a McDonnell Douglas MD-81 SAS Package V1.
And I'm confused on the instructions it says to:

''Copy and paste the SimObjects folder to your main FSX directory. When asked to overwrite, say yes; All files will be put in their respective places.''

If I do what the instructions say won't I lose all my other airplanes in the SimObjects folder? Everything will be overwritten correct?

    Thanks for any information.

    Regards.

I am not sure what others may recommend, but I am with you - those instructions sound potentially "dangerous".

Here is what I would do:

    1. Make a Copy of your existing SimObjects folder (as a backup in case the worst happens).

    2. Follow the instructions and check the results. If it just added the aircraft then you are OK. If it indeed did something else, you can delete it and restore the original.

    OR

    3. Look at the SimObjects folder of your new addition and if it contains a subfolder named Airplanes with the new aircraft, just Copy that aircraft's folder and Paste it into your existing Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes folder.

If it were me, I would do the latter - that way I would know I am adding to the folder and not accidently removing something which is required or that I already have added.

In any case you sure do not want to "lose" anything you already have in your SimObjects folder.

    Hope this helps.

Technically, no. It will probably not over write any files at all, those instructions are usually given when installing over versions. They will basically merge the two Airplane folders into one. However, I, like David, recommend that you do it manually, as I always do.

That worked perfect! Thank you very much for the help Opaplano.
The original instructions may have worked but
in this case better safe than sorry I guess.

    Best Regards.

Having looked at the folder structure of the McDonnell Douglas MD-81 SAS Package V1 .zip file, it would have installed perfectly by simply following the original instructions...

...although, to be honest I would have upzipped it to a \Temp folder and copy/pasted the stuff myself!
