    Default Probably been asked....

But, in anticipation of getting a new PC soon, will I be able to transfer my FSX and paid-for add ons (UTX,GEX) without having to repurchase said items? I'm thinking of doing a USB cable transfer, or, if need be, I have a flashdrive.
I've only activated FSX once so far, so no worries if I have to activate again. But the UTX & GEX have me concerned; those are about $40 bucks each, and I'd hate to lose them.
    Thank you!

    Hi,

You will not be able to "transfer" UTX and GEX installs, but just download and install from scratch. The License key files are tied directly to hardware. Activation will not be a problem!
    Thanks,

    Jim

You mean reinstall from the zip files? I don't have the CD; I downloaded from the website. I won't have to repurchase, will I?

If you have your registration key, all you have to do is select 'reinstall' (during install), select your registration key (hopefully saved; look for a 'Flight One Software' directory on your C: drive) and use the last 4 digits of the credit card you used as your 'password', and perform the reinstall.

This is why most all of us swear by the Flight1 'wrapper' system.

Additionally, I highly recommend organizing and backing up all these and similar 'license' and .exe install files. I have them backed up twice myself.

    kingnorris,

You may be able to solve your problem for $50 US or so. Check out the payware backup/restore utility named Acronis, available at http:www.acronis.com. This program will image copy the registry and everything else, and should be able to transfer the old drive image to the new one, even if the drives are of different size.

For more detailed information kindly send a forum private mail to member loki, or wait till he sees this post.

The problem with using Acronis True Image Home in this case is that the registry and system will have settings and drivers for the hardware in the old system. Acronis has an optional add-on called Universal Restore for their workstation version of Acronis True Image to help with this. This costs $30 more than the home version, which is designed for backing up and restoring to the same computer.

You can reinstall all your Flight1 software files unlimited on any computer hooked up to the internet, no problems. I've done it when I got this new machine, and several times afterewards. If you go over the key amount, you might just have to reset the key at Flight1.com.

    Ouch, loki, I didn't know that ...

I'd better think about buying the workstation version after all because, while my main concern is quickly restoring an existing machine after a virus attack or whatever, my secondary concern is being able to get back on the air quickly with a replacement computer.

I'm sitting here smacking myself on the forehead because I realize now that you told me about this issue six months ago. It's just that I didn't understand you at that time.

Oh well, the $50 king is dead, long live the $80 king.
