Thread: Transfering An Install

  1. Default Transfering An Install

    How is everyone doing?
I've been away a while, my old PC's graphics card died on me, and that left me unable to sim. I finally have a new laptop. It's a macbook pro, intel dual core, and I run windows under bootcamp. I'm looking to get back into it, but i'd hate to have to reinstall everything. I have many many addons on my old install, and I was wondering if there is a way i can just copy the whole thing over to my new system and have it work correctly. The thing I don't know how to do is move addons such as ground environment pro, and ultimate traffic and make sure they still work.

If not, i guess ill have to rip out the cd's and start installing from scratch, but id like to avoid this if possible.

    Thanks!

Some addons can be moved rather easily, others can't. Unless you are familiar with the registry, key files, .ini files, and so on, it is usually easier to just go ahead and reinstall. I just went through this and found that reinstallation is far easier, in most cases, than hacking your way through - anything from flight1 is very easy to reinstall and except for my TU-134 (Ariane) everything from other vendors went back in just fine. As a bonus you end up with a clean installation.

I completely agree - it is more work, but well worth the effort in the long run.

You may wish to review the following before enbarking on such a project:

    Hi,
I would agree that trying to transfer is not a good way to do it.

There are many more registry files that might not be "fixed" or transferred to your laptop.
All it takes is ONE little registry entry to be missing or misplaced, such as an addon scenery to mess up your main installation. In addition, you will know that a file is installed right, with a clean install you don't have to worry about potential missing files. System crashes, lockups, error messages, you don't need that.

Take the time and do it right, you will be happy you did.
    Best of luck,
    Gary.

For the price of about $50 the software utility Acronis could be purchased. It would allow the entire contents of the old machine's C drive to be imaged on that of the new machine, including the complete contents of the registry.

Acronis can be purchased from the developers at http://www.acronis.com.
