Default Commerative Event is September 28

Our September event will be a visit to the cemetery where an old friend is buried. Our old friend was murdered late one night in cold blood by a ruthless egomanic.

Do you know where we are going?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

We are going Meigs Field on Sunday September 28, 2008. Not because it is some kind of anniversary, but because it is important that we place flowers on loved ones' graves from time to time. It is important to remember those things that have made us happy.

This is a fly-in event. You can leave from any airport of your choosing. Plan your landing at Miegs Field in Chicago at 2100 GMT. Announce your flight plans in advance in this thread and join each other at originating airports or enroute, so you will not have to fly alone.

I will be in the control tower at Meigs at 2000 GMT to provide ATC to all incoming flights and the tower will be manned until 2200 GMT for any late arrivals.

In March 2006, we had an event in Chicago called "MEIGS FIELD ANNIVERSARY FLIGHT AND AIR RACE IS MARCH 12, 2006". The link to that event is here: http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=136507

I cannot locate all the files for this event, but you can take off from Meigs and run the course mentioned in the event if you want to enjoy a quick air race while in Chicago. It was loads of fun at the time.

This will be an open event. Just show up and come along. Any air race is optional. I read the comments about open events in several posts since out last event, and we will password future events as you requested. This will be our last open event, unless we are trying to attract new pilots. Since Geoff is still away, I may have to have some help in the confirmation process. We can discuss that at Meigs.

Meanwhile, I am going to remove our server from FSHostSpy on the day of the event, since the number of players we have pushes us close to the top of the list. Pilots join the session when they see the high participation. Hopefully this will reduce the number of sudden joins of unprepared pilots.

We will be using our FSHost server on IP 76.125.25.59. We'll set up a Teamspeak server and notify you of the Teamspeak IP as you check in for the event on FSHost.

We hope to see you at Meigs on Sunday.

    Thanks Ed,

That was an easy yet fun event. Obilio won it, as I remember, in a real small single place private jet. BD-5J

We can all use whatever we want of course, but this is a great practice arena for the props too!

It's a tight course that demands acuracy as well as speed. Bigger ain't better for this one.

There are a couple of FS9 scenery files for Meigs Field including a bgl file to put in ILS.

The race scenery works in FSX as well and nice scenery file for FSX too. You'll need to run the polygon fix to get the trees and shrubs off of the paved sufaces at the airport.

Just type meigs field in the search box at the library here.

Here are a few pics of the scenery in FSX.

    See Ya there!

    Ed,

Please can you confirm the timing - the USA and Europe are still on daylight saving time, so 2100GMT is 5pm EDT.

    Hi Mick,

The time is in GMT not BST. Since it's a fly-in, I moved the time an hour from our usual 2000 GMT to 2100 GMT.

You can begin your flight from anywhere at anytime. Shoot for landing around 2100 GMT, but anytime between 2000 and 2200 will be fine. If you plan to do any air racing, land earlier in the the time window.

    Best,

    Ed

Thanks for the clarification Ed. I will be flying in from my home field London Gatwick in the Vickers Super VC10. http://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/ it's a British classic, easy to fly and should land on the short runway.

Anyone is welcome to join me along the route, I'll be setting off at 1400GMT, overhead Shannon 14:46, Goose Bay 18:12, Toronto 20:00, to arrive at 2100 - well that's what FS Nav says anyway!

Well, well, this event is a mere stone's throw away from my home here in Southwest Michigan. Only about 100 miles away from Meigs as the crow flies from me. What better opportunity to dust off the ol' default Cessna 172 and have a nice relaxing flight across Lake Michigan from Padgham Field in Allegan (just a twenty minute drive from my hometown)?

However, I've decided the ol' 172 was in need of a new paint job, so I decided to spruce it up in the colors of my alma mater, Western Michigan University. It's avaliable here at flightsim under 172_wmuc.zip.

Not sure if I'll get in on the air racing. If I do, I have a Grumman F9F Panther from Aeroplane Heaven that might want to take a bite out of that course.

    Cool Skyhawks over the Lake

    Hey Red,

I was gonna take the "Connie" into O'Hare and then fly into Meigs in whatever I was gonna race.

Skyhawks westbound across the Lake in the afternoon sounds pretty stinkin' good though.

How 'bout I land at Gerald R Ford instead change planes and meet you at 35D in a Skyhawk for the ride over??

Maybe some of these other knuckleheads around here would like to join??

    What do ya say??

Screenie is over Seatle, but that's the paint I'll use,,,

dboc172.zip at the library here,,,already downloaded yours.

    Cheers,

This knucklehead would meet you at KGRR, not sure about the Skyhawk though if we're racing? If can decide on that and when we want to arrive at Meigs, I'll work out some timings. It's 112nm between the two, about an hour in the Skyhawk, 25mins in a P51H.

Sounds like a plan, SA. I'm planning on departing Allegan at about 3:50 PM (EDT) or so. Would love to have another Skyhawk to accompany me as well.
