Thread: CPU vs Graphic Card

    Default CPU vs Graphic Card

Does FS9 rely more on the cpu or the graphics card for performance? I have been reading on the forum that FSX relies heavily on the cpu and that got me to wondering about FS9.

FS9 relies more on the CPU than the video card as well. At this point though, a current mid-range system will have no trouble running FS9 as both CPUs and video cards have come a long ways since FS9 was released.

I keep reading that too, but I have a Nvidia 6600GT 128 MB card, on a 3.0 Ghz P4. I would think that an upgrade to an 8800 or something along those lines would be a benefit without upgrading the CPU. Am I wrong?

both GPU and CPU must be in a level. ie: low level graphics + low speed processor= low performance mid range GPU + Mid speed CPU= acceptable performance

Newest GPU + lowest speed procesor or viceversa = low performance

It will also depend a little bit on the resolution you are running at as well. A GeForce 6600 and an 8800 won't show much difference at 1280x024 and lower. Jump up to 1680x1050 or 1600x1200 or higher, and the 8800 should start showing some benefit.

As Ticava says, it is all about balancing the system. Having one component more powerful than the others is just means it won't be used to its full potential.

Along the lines of "balancing" the CPU and the video card I am looking at the E8400 CPU and am thinking of a 6800 GT video card for cost effectiveness. Or would I be better to wait until I can get the 8800 within the budget I have set for myself?

    Thanks

    A good balance would be a 8800GT or 9800GTX and a E8400

The 6800 is probably 4 years old.

I agree with regards to the 8800GT.

It's priced very well and definitely has the performance over the 6800.
