Thread: Getting viruses through Flightsim.com?

    Angry Getting viruses through Flightsim.com?

Hey guys, this is the only place I thought this could go...

Anyway I have been getting viruses/spam/trojans etc through FSX files here, don't know why though.

I downloaded a Project Open Sky Air Force One for FSX and immeditly I got some window that popped up asking me to download some "Antivirus 2009" which I could tell this was a fakey.

It also happened yesterday, and took me all of my morning today to remove it. >

I'm not sure why this is, its getting annoying though, I have used flightsim.com for over 5 years now and this is the first time it has ever happened.

I'm sure how active these forums are, as this is my first time joining the forums.

I really shouldn't of chosen that name "VistaX" as I just switched back to XP three days ago lol.

    VistaX,

Welcome to the forums. It would have been better if you had made your post to the Newcomer Services forum but that's fine, we'll do it here ...

First, webmaster Nels Anderson personally maintains the FlightSim.com file library, and he virus-checks everything submitted and admitted to the library. It would be very unusual for anything to slip past his screen.

Second, if you're using the AVG antivirus program it is possible that you're getting a false positive regarding viruses associated with FSX files. In fact this is likely, not simply possible.

So ... Kindly tell us which antivirus program you're using.

Have you run any anti-malware/spyware apps like Windows Defender or Spybot recently? It could be a malware program re-directing FlightSim.com ad links.

I just got XP on my dv9540us, installed all of my drivers from ONLY trusted sources, used a legit disc from microsoft, I dont have any virus protection, other than common sense. created a shortcut of FSX (I have it on my Vista partition) and installed a few moar aircraft.

Btw, what is the deal with the F-14 for FS2004/FSX? the file name is FSXF14D.ZIP, I know its missing from the database but i always had issues with it because it crashes FS2004 and even FSX.

btw, I'm not quite a noob. I have been flightsimming evar since FS98, but i started taking it srsly about 5 years ago. So i have been FSing since... 8-10 years now?

I have AVG, no problems with flightsim.com files, sounds like you have some spyware going that redirects you when you try a download.

Spybot is free and keeps me safe.

    VistaX,

You wrote "Anyway I have been getting viruses/spam/trojans etc through FSX files ..."

If you're not using any software tools and are instead using only common sense, how do you know this to be true?

Listen, I don't know how this quite happened, but it was fixed. I removed the files and that was done. I am just not sure why this happened. I opened up a folder, and their was something very supsicious. For every folder name (ie, panel) their was another file with the same name, but not a folder. I got rid of the download, it was very hard because it wouldn't let me delete it. I setup a virtual machine in VMware, re-download it with linux and see what the file name was if your like. All I remember is that it was a panel for a 727 for FSX. I still cant find one, tried some FS2004 panels, but as expected it said it was incompatable.

    VistaX,

    Thanks for the correction.

    Folks,

I'm compelled to point something out ...

The FlightSim.com file library is the cleanest one of them all. The fact that webmaster Nels Anderson personally manages the library means that the level of quality control is both uniform and very high.

I don't want to name names so let's just say that not every other site can make that same statement.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope that Nels will not mind my saying the following ...

I know for a fact that the first thing Nels does at the start of every day (almost always every day of the week) is to work up and post the days' file library transactions. He gives this absolute priority over all other activities.

He also gives the same level of care to Train-Sim.com, another of his productions.

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This attention to quality and integrity of the file library above all other interests is a good example of why I choose to hang out at FlightSim.com.

I'm NEVER going to stop downloading from here, I have been getting all my planes from here and simvation's HJG line of aircraft and thats it. I just don't understand why this ever happened, but thats behind me now. I will still download airplanes from here as always. I guess it was just a fluke.

speaking of anti virus software...i recently sitched to avast...out of curiosity more than anything...
but, unlike my previous anti virus...avg 8.0...i see no sign that avast loads up on startup...is there something I need to do, or does it simply monitor silently in the background. fwiw, it does not appear to be running in my services list, unless i am not recognizing its service entrees....thanks...
