I don't know whether the following would be of interest to you but it might be of interest to others ...

Falling in the middle of your accept/reject space is Mig Alley -- Korean war Sabre and Mig dogfights plus combat missions of various kinds. This product is probably out of print but eBay is a wonderful thing.

I've seen that, and it looks pretty arcade-style but it should be enjoyable...

You should try Jane's USAF, old but good fun with many add-ons.

Any one of the Thirdwire sims aka: Strike Fighters / Wings Over Vietnam / Wings Over Europe / Wings Over Israel. You can combine all 4 into one huge combat flight sim.

I second the Thirdwire Sims as they are very high quality in terms of flight modeling and campaign models. Be warned however, none of them work in Vista until you tweak some files!

    And one more thing...

I long for the days when computer games (most notably simulations) were made for adults, not kids and short attention spanned children who happen to be of the adult age... (thank you soooooo much Generation X)

I enjoyed Janes and falcon 3.0 back in the early 90s.
After that I never enjoyed combat sims again.
Falcon 4 and Lock-on have very artificial feeling of flying the plane.
Landing is a joke, the navigation systems are too arcade easy, with an arrow pointing home ??

You cannot fly single missions, you have to interact with your wingman, plan the attack instruct them what to do, all this is nice and realllistic but with time you get tired and dogfights are boring.

Another goodone again in the eraly 90s was Eurofighter 2000. Stable, radar lock were reallistic, nice and smooth etc.

In the new games you have to tun into an arcade teenager to avoid being hit in a mission by several enemies (even chosing one-to one) you cannot campaign, so its more muscles than using flight skills.

I love flying an airplane...if in the process I can fire a couple of missiles and bombs...fine.

But I hate arcade and having to study the game built-in intelligence and learn to use your joystick as a tennis racket.

This must be so tru that military sims drop in popularity after the 90s

It does not seem that you really have tried any of these really.
AF4, I have just briefly tried. For Lockon I can really say. Then I suppose you have tried the 1.12 FC version?

Sure you can fly singel player. Create your own mission or download a singleplayer mission and off you go....simple as that.
No need to fly with a AI wingman if you don't want to.

Don't want to dogfight.... then Lockon is really your game.
Taking a Su25T on ground pounding combat mission is rewarding and extremely hard if you choose to take on a good setup mission.

Artificial feeling?? don't know as I'm not a fighter pilot, but it's regarded as one of the best fightersims when it comes to feeling, especially if you use the Flaming Cliffs addon. The Su-25T is a hog to fly. Needs constant trimming. You say Eurofighter was good.....now we are talking arcade.... sure it's older so it's hard to compare but still. Learning to manage the radar take quite a while.

Check these training videos. It gives you a hint. And Ironhand still makes it look easy.

Navigation easy with an arrow pointing towards home..?? Are you sure you have not tried the Arcade setup ;-) Then I could understand your comments.
The systems are working pretty much as a "modern" fighter is working today.

Please don't confuse Lockon with with Ace combat 6 ;-)

Sorry to sound like a Lockon fanboy, I know there are flaws in Lockon and AF4 (as with any sim) , but the reasons you give I just cannot agree on.
