    Default Issues with VISTA

Back on the forum after a long absence.

Just got a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and installed FSX Standard.

Tried to install extra aircraft but not having much success.

    The file is: harfsx23.zip.

I have followed my old (XP) procedure and unzipped with folder names to a new unzipped folder and the files are all there. I then followed the advice in the readme.txt and copied various files over to the right folder in the aircraft folder for FSX but nothing now shows and the aircraft doesn't appear when I start FSX.

I also needed FSUICP and have downloaded the latest version and installed using the self extractor and this appears in the modules folder as the readme says so that seems OK.

I know that VISTA has a strange way of copying/moving files (not got my head around it yet) so wondered if there was something I need to do to copy the files from the unzipped folder to their correct place in the aircraft folder.

Would unzipping direct to the aircraft folder work?

Also what about self installing extras do they normal install OK with VISTA or do I need to do something differnet with them.

    Thanks

there is no "aircraft" folder in FSX. There's a simobjects/airplanes folder instead.
If you put anything in an "aircraft" folder it's not recognised by FSX as an aircraft.

    Hi, thanks

Sorry my typo should have said simobjects/airplanes.

Have installed another airplane that had it's own installer and that has worked, so problem seems to relate to copying files within Vista for some reason.

    Any help much appreciated

Disable UAC in Vista and Vista won't protect files on your C-disk. A good thing in Vista is to install FSX on another disk than C. Som good info here http://www.flight1.com/view.asp?page=vista

I have had a no problems with Vista after disabling UAC, DEP, Windows Defender and a whole lot of services. I use NOD32 antivirus program and I've excluded the FSX folders from realtime virus scanning. My computer is protected behind a router with firewall.

Thanks for the link. Have taken a quick look but need to read it through more thoroughly.

As I said, I am still getting to grips with Vista and some of it's quirks.

Just to save time, can you or someone else tell me if the problem I am having copying files into the FSX folder from my unzipped folder is due to the issues raised in the link you gave or is there something else I need to address.

Self installers don't seem to have any problem, just unzipped installs.

    Thanks

I can't determine what causes your problem. I haven't got the "harfsx23.zip" installed and can't verify if the ac works ok and if your installation is complete.

Vista with, by default, protect files on your C-drive. If you have FSX installed on the C-drive, Vista UAC (User Account Control) will try to protect files from being changed by you, even if your'e Vista logon account has admin privileges.

If you suspect that the Vista file protection might be the cause, you could easily turn of UAC and make the install. After that you may turn on UAC again. How hard can that be - just do it and report back if you still got problems with that add-on ;-)

I decided to download and use the TweakFS Zip Utility for FSX and see if that would work.

It seemed to be OK reporting that the files had been unzipped to the correct folders but when I looked there was nothing there.

I then did a search and found that the files had been written to the virtual store, which from your comments and my searching with Google is because of the Vista UAC (User Account Control.

I am beginning to realise that this is more a Vista issue rather than a specific FSX file problem. From the FXS point of view I certain others have had the same problem and perhaps there is a forum thread somewhere that I could read that will give advice on dealing with zipped downloads within FSX.

The UAC facility now answers a couple of general problems I've had since switching to Vista where files haven't been copied across to the C: drive as I expected. What happens about files in the virtual store, do they just remain there or can they be deleted etc.

Disabling UAC would clearly resolve a number of issues, I assume, but I want to get a bit more familiar with Vista first so that I understand the full implications of doing so. I accept your point that you haven't had any problems but I'm cautious by nature when it comes to computer security issues.

When it comes to computer security issues, you have to choose between having these troubles or decreasing the security level. Note that you may TEMPORARILY disable UAC. You may also alter the authorization for you logon account regarding the FSX folder and subfolders.

What antivirus protection do you use? Do you have a hardware firewall between your pc and your internet connection?

Thanks again, will take a look at the links you gave. Sorry to be a pain but not really got to grips with Vista yet.

For starters how would I alter the authorization for my account for the FSX folder and subfolders as this seems the most likely use I will have for copying/moving unzipped file contents.

I have a wireless router so yes I do have a hardware firewall, or at least I think my SWART 2-54125 does have a firewall inbuilt. I'm using Norton 360 for anti-virus as this came as a special when I purchased the laptop. Have to say that despite my own reservations with Norton in the past it's working very well, not as intrusive as most of the freeware progs I used in the past.

That is described in the first link to Flight1 that I provided.

Yes, your router has a firewall. Some wireless routers are default wide open and you have to manually secure your network. I don't know if this is the case with your router. Here is a link to a post with several links to sources about your router. Several of them seems to be on topic regarding security.

I have no recent experience with Norton antivirus program, but Norton's protection should be fine. Do you have the possibility to exclude FSX folders from real time scanning, to improve FSX performance? You could try that to see if it makes any difference when you start FSX or load a flight.
