With the default airbus a321 i have noticed that FD is always on whenever the plane leaves the ground and can't be turned off by pressing the flight director button unless autopilot is engaged, is there any way to turn it off?

It turns off in my system anytime I press it, no matter what mode.
Try loading FS again to the default 321.
That's the only thing I can think of.

Tried that it just won't turn off, from when I leave the ground to when I land.
I can turn it off when under autopilot but the moment I disengage the autopilot it is straight back on again. It limits my ability to control the plane how I wan't to and is extremly annoying. Anyone else got any ideas?
The FD doesn't have any affect on your ability to control the aircraft.
Go to the the overhead panel and turn off the 4 push buttons under FLT CLT on the RIGHT SIDE of the overhead only. The left side will disable your controller leave them on.
This will enable you to control the aircraft since it disables the Fly By Wire system.

but that still has not adressed the base problem why won't it turn off?
what does FD do anyway?

I fly through the valley of death, but I fear no evil, for I am at 80,000 feet and climbing. Let's powerdive and scare that poor soul in that Ultralight there.
I can't say because mine works with AP on or off. Perhaps someone else here has had the same problem, but I don't see any takers.
Are you starting with a default aircraft in your saved default flight?.....(and that doesn't mean the trike senerio when you first loaded FSX. It just means starting with any MSFSX default aircraft as your "saved" default flight)
Perhaps an addon has created this. I wouldn't be a bit surprised!
If the problem persists, I would try.............
1. uninstalling Microsoft Flight Simulator X Service Pack 2
2. running a repair in MSX
3. reinstalling Service Pack 2
as outlined here....http://www.fsinsider.com/downloads/P...EN-ReadMe.aspx
before doing a complete reinstall of FSX
Let us know what you find.
