Thread: Installing a new CPU.

  1. Default Installing a new CPU.

Tomorrow I will be replacing my current CPU an E2160 1.8gig Core Duo with a more powerful E8400 3gig Core 2 Duo and was just wondering if I need to do anything to FSX in order for it to use the full power of the CPU?

Nope, there shouldn't be anything as far as FSX is concerned. You have probably checked already, but does your motherboard support the new processor, or does it need a BIOS update?

Cheers I have already checked and my motherboard which is a Asrock ConRoe1333-D667 needs a BIOS of 1.60 or higher for the E8400 CPU and mine is 1.80, so there should be no problems with it. Hopefully should get a pretty decent FPs with my set-up then as I have a GeForce 8500GT 512meg graphics card and 2 gigs of DDR2 RAM.

It's probably not needed, but I'd do a format and fresh install of your OS.

that's indeed not needed. There's never a need to do that unless your operating system has become seriously contaminated or corrupted.

Think I will be fine without a re-install as this PC is only 4 months old and the OS is in tip-top condition. In the past the only time I have had to do a whole re-install was when I had a motherboard blow on me and I had to replace it with a different one.

So you'd replace your motherboard with a different model/brand and just hope for the best? I know it's not needed for a CPU replacement, but I'd do it anyway, and that's just me. I usually reinstall XP Pro about 2 times per year.

Interesting... I have three machines here that are at least five years old, and have never had WinXP reinstalled...

Well, you should try it out and be surprised at the difference.
