    Default Quick Multiplayer question:

    Hi everyone, I have flown online a number if times before, and I always have the same problem when closing a session;

    I click on 'disconnect', the dialog box shows up saying 'disconnecting from the session, please wait...', and this dialog box stays frozen on the screen, and won't go off.
    Is this because of my slow dial-up internet connection, or is it something more?

    Help appreciated!

    Alot of times it can be due to your port settings on your router, but if you are on dial up, I would wager a guess that you dont have a router.

    The fact that he has dialup isn't relevant to wheter he has a network, I have broadband and no router. I suspect his modem isn't receiving the signal to disconnect.

    Default Dial up problem

    Wow, I haven't dealt with a dial up problem in a long time. I had dialup not to long ago and was only able to connect at around 26 to 28k. Ugh! That was due to being way out in the sticks. I had a rounter at the time, but I didn't use it to connect thru the telephone. How does the connection do during the game? If it does well then it isn't the dialup speed. When browsing online do you have any problems then? Has it always been this way? What operating system are you using?

    I say CPSBruce is correct and for some reason the disconnect message isn't being transmitted or, if a responce is required, no reply is being recieved or recognized from the server. That could be at your end or it could be the server end. Do you have the same problem when you connect to a different server?

    Things that could affect your connection are your system resources, not running disk clean up, and not defragging your harddrive. Of course those can affect your whole computer in general. Not performing these steps can cause your computer to run slower. Having run FS9 for a while may bring your resources down causing problems when you attempt to disconnect. Windows XP typically uses it's resources better than Windows 98 and other versions of Windows did. Just because you exited an application doesn't mean that it then eliminated the application from memory. This was done just in case you changed your mind and re-opened it. However that meant after a while you had to reboot your computer. Even with XP, temporary files are created and eventually you will have to perform disk clean up.

    Wireless phones used to cause static on the line reducing connection quality. I don't know if they still do or not as it has been many years since I worked tech support. One would assume they would have. I guess a cheap one would still.

    During multiplayer flight, the connection is quite slow, with other aircraft moving at less than 3 FPS, and it can sometimes take a long time to connect. When browsing online, I do have problems, such as image searches on any search engine don't work; I just get 'This page cannot be displayed', and I always get the message 'Internet browser has encountered a problem, and has to close' while I am browsing. It has not always been like this. I am using Windows XP Professional edition.
    Can this be resolved, or should I just get broadband?

    Default Slow connection

    When was the last time you ran disk clean up and defragged your hard drive? What kind of connection speeds are you getting now as compared to before? When you talk to someone do you hear a lot of static or popping and cracking? Where the telephone line plugs into the computer it should have a picture or profile of the end the telephone connector. The picture of the phone is for an actual telephone to plug into. Does that telephone line run straight to the telephone wall outlet or does go to an answering machine first? Preferably it should go straight to the wall outlet and the cable should be just long enough to get the job done, the longer the cable the more interference possible. A common occurrence amongst computer users is to have all kinds of programs starting up with their computers, instant messengers and weather bugs for an example. It seems every program that you install wants to put something in your startup files. If you have a lot of Icons down beside you time that maybe part of the problem. If you don’t have a lot of ram it can slow your computer down as well as your connection. In addition the programs I mentioned can use up bandwidth and with a dialup you don’t have a lot of bandwidth to begin with.

    After all things are said and done, a broadband connection is the way to go. It will make a world of difference. It will be well worth the expense. If possible try to get cable as the weather can wreak havoc on a satellite dish.
