I know how to connect to a server, that's quite straightforward, but I don't want to jump in like a cat among the pigeons.

How do I learn 'the rules'?

Who do I contact, how do I contact them, should I have a flight plan or can I just cruise around aimlessly?

Is there a training server (I couldn't see one).

Most sites have their own rules, especially the bigger sites. I would make sure you've thoroughly read the rules specifically for that site before you go online and 'burn bridges'. People get pretty uppity about online flying, that's why I don't do it. Don't let me or others discourage you though, just be respectful of the host's rules and you may enjoy it!!

Try this setup - Freeflight Europe -Go into Multipplayer type in a name for yourself then type in the box next to search 92.51.137.11 then press join.What ever airfield you put yourself in you should park yourself on an apron really but no big deal on this setup.I use it with some friends as a learning place.You can use the chat box to communicate or better still if you have free Skype then you can voice communicate.You can do what you want to your hearts content but as soon as you connect to someone you'll definitely get some friendly help and make progress and take to simming with abit more meaningful activity.There's nothing to fear so may see you in the blue yonder? tigisfat, I couldn't see anything on the 'join' panel info that told me about their website etc but I'll look a bit harder next time.

Fred, thanks very much. I will give that a go when I next can. I found when I connected to one and site I tried that I was in the air at some random position. I'll have to work out how I get to a starting position when I enter, not knowing which part of the world I am going into! What should I expect to see when I first join? And does that server have an ATC guy or is it generally 'free flight'?

You mention Skype, which I have, but don't most people use the in-sim comms?

I'm comfortable with being on line as I have been for many years in combat simulators (no spitting please!) and I know some people are pretty firm about how things are done (I am to some extent . Definitely at the bottom end here though and just learning the Mooney Bravo.

btw I did try about three sites but in every case the server shut down after a few minutes so I am probably some kind of Jonah

Hi Klem,I just set myself on apron at any airport then click into multiplayer ,type in name,the numbers I sent, then click join. what happens next is the airport view comes on with a green ticker tape saying you've joined. Afterwards then click on Flight,scroll to Multiplayer,click on it and then click on Chatwindow where you can text for some attenttion.For the moment you are on there are no rigid rules until you form them with someone you happen to come across.If it suits you then try this evening at 21:30 at Nottingham Airport -EGNX.There should be at least 3 of us on then.Just Text 'Klem Hi Fred,Paul,Mick'At least 1 of us will text back. There are many FSHost servers used for casual flying.
You can also use the MSN Zone link, to find a server that suits you.

Fred, I'll try that. I'm off on hols this Saturday for a week but I may get some time later on this Friday evening. Don't put yourself out though, I may not make it and if I do it will be enough to get a successful connection.

I tried VATSIM and found it a bit intimidating to be honest. They say on their message boards that they are tolerant and supportive of newbies but I didn't really find that. I'll give it nother go one day though, it seems the way forward to get the most out of flight simming.

Ok Klem.I'm usually on in the evenings anyway generally at 21:30 with the other two pilots getting some tuition.Had a good evening last night with our VA doing EGBB --> EGNM --> EGNS. About 6 of us and friendly ATC and a tussle with the weather conditions cloudy and misty but happy landings and a chat with the crew. Fred D207
