Default How to open bittorrent seed file?

OK, nobody has the exclusive on dumb questions, so I have another one! I downloaded what I believe is an iso image of a new cool linux distro opengeu 8.04 alpha, it's a snazzed up verson of Ubuntu 8.04. There was apparently no other easy way to download it that I could see, so went ahead w/ the bittorrent even though it was my first. Now I have the bittorrent seed file. And I think somewho in that file is the iso image. Sooo, how do I open it?

Or is the bittorrent seed file sort of a virtual bucket that I need to open while online so that other bittorrent users that have that file can sling data into it? Don't mean to sound like a data slinger, but this is all new to me.

You need a Bittorrent client to download the actual ISO file. The seed file you downloaded just tells the Bittorrent client where to connect to get the ISO. One of the more popular clients is uTorrent. It's quite small and doesn't take a lot of resources to run. Another popular one is Azureus, but it is much larger and requires Java.

Thanks very much loki. I think I found an alternative direct download site for this distro. On distrowatch.org there are some very interesting distros. Theres a multimedia distro that sounds very interesting.

I got a few more distros. I'm starting to have distros coming out of my ears. Suddenly MS no longer appears to be a monopoly, at least from my perspective, however how many people explore Linux?

98se/me do seem very antiquated, however they are still able to run MS FS, which in my opinion is vital. When I get more experience with linux I'll see what will work with the latest wine, and try out x-plane when my budget allows.

Take a look at these openbsd.org related pages. How do I download from for example that second page?

    http://cvs.openbsd.org/ftp.html
    http://mirror.planetunix.net/pub/OpenBSD/

I'm used to clicking on a link then starting the download, I mean fer sure fer sure!

OK, I try out the ftp pages and it's about the same thing, how do I download this?

    ftp://mirrors.24-7-solutions.net/pub/OpenBSD/
    ftp://mirrors.24-7-solutions.net/pub/OpenBSD/4.3/
    ftp://mirrors.24-7-solutions.net/pub/OpenBSD/4.3/i386

It seems like you gotta be some kinda computer scientist to get openbsd 4.3. Do you have a suggestion?

I'm getting distros coming outta my ears!

I think I've got freebsd but haven't tried it out yet to see if i've got the right one, the live disk.

I've got opensolaris, but haven't tried it out yet.

Looks like you would need to download the "install43.iso" file from the ftp://mirrors.24-7-solutions.net/pub/OpenBSD/4.3/i386/ directory.

If you want to try out a BSD system, I would start with PC-BSD. It's geared towards end users as a desktop system. While OpenBSD, FreeBSD and the others can be used as a desktop system, they still tend to be geared more towards the developer and server world.

Thanks once again. I think I have free bsd, I haven't had a chance to burn the iso's I have. I had the crazy idea of trying to find the ac97 drivers for what I think is my 845 intel board, the driver from the intel website hasn't been working, along with the pc mgmt bus. I heard that the pc mgmt bus only controls the agp slot, which this board doesn't have so I think lack of this being installed shouldn't affect other systems? So the intel sound driver must be bogus. Downloaded a corrupt file from a driver website, installed then uninstalled a zip program, then couldn't get back to the default compressed folder dll used by ME. ME is so lame. Had to get that back, so did a system restore, tried doing it manually but that was not working. This uninstalled my internet adaptor, which I'm now trying to reinstall. ME is so lame. What a pain in the gui! Have to reinstall Deepburner also. That is so good for burning iso's. I can't wait to get more distro's.
