    Default Windows XP sp3 problems

After installing sp3, the drivers on both my DVD and CD drives got screwed up! (same manufacturer: Lite-on).

Device manager listed them with the yellow exclamation marks, as if their respective drivers weren't installed. I tried reinstalling them but just couldn't, so I had to pull a system restore to get them working again.

    Anyone have any similar problems?

That's messed up. Lite-on is a top name brand. I'd like to hear more problems.

That's screwed up. In terms of drivers, DVD/CD burners can typically be served by a generic driver as they all follow the same standard interface....

I’ve never heard of this problem before. I’ve installed XP/SP3 on machines with Plextor, Sony and Lite-on drives without any issues. What else was installed before you installed SP3?

Before you used system restore did you try the “update driver” option in device manager?

Sure did, it told me: "windows encountered an error and could not install the device drivers" or something like that.

Was this a clean install of SP3 or an install over XP with programs/applications previously installed? If so, did you have CD/DVD burning software installed?

As a side note, do you think that sp3 requires a clean xp install first?

And I wonder if you have the old original xp w/o sp2, or sp1, if you can just install sp3 straight onto that?

As with any service pack you may get away with installing it on your current system, and you may not.

I haven't seen a server pack released that people didn't have problems with....especially on an old install of Windows. As already mentioned by Loki, some can get away with an upgrade install. Me personally, I have NEVER had a problem with any service pack when I've wiped and reloaded.

If want to slipstream the latest service pack into your Windows install, check out nlite at http://www.nliteos.com/. It's quite a handy tool to have.
