More Defrag Stuff

This is probably stoopid but I'm just wondering. I recently downloaded "O&O Defrag 2000" (Freeware Version) and am becoming more comfortable with it. Initially I had some doubts.

My question is: Can one Defrag program, say XP Default Defragger, Upset..or Rearrange the work that O&O just did when IT just compacted and arranged the files? It seems to me if one program gets done and says your good to go, the other one should "prettty much" say the same when you run one after the other. Or.. is this really of no consiquence? SPOFF

If all you're doing is a space defragmentation, all programs should agree on the number of files that are fragmented. However, they probably will not agree on the best way to achieve the desired compaction, nor will they necessarily agree that a disk compacted by O&O should be left alone.

Ya, that's what I say, what mike was saying. a different defrag program could defrag the order of your files completely differently.

Thanks guys. O&O Defrag (Free) IS a "Space" only defrag, according to what it tells me. The "analyze" portion of the job always takes 26 minutes no matter if 6 files are fragged or 530. The Defrag part of the job varies from 8 minutes down to as little as less than 2 minutes. I like the display. It's Pretty.

As an example, the other night there were 530 fragged** files and it took less than 2 minutes to "Defragment/Compact" them. The next day I did it again and there were 130 fragged files and it took almost 5 minutes to "Defragment/Compact" them. ALWAYS takes 26 minutes to "Analyze". It put me to sleep the first couple of times I tried it. I need to stay awake while it's running.

O&O has a nice little report when it finishes. XP Default Defrag doesn't have that BUT..It (XP) usually takes less than 5 minutes for the whole beginning to end process. I think I'll just use O&O for awhile By Itself, rather than follow it up with the XP Defrag. I'll have to "stifle" my curiousity though

**NOTE: I don't know why there were 530 fragged files, because I had not Added/Removed anything in the past few days. OH Wait: I ADDED "O&O" (2.1MB)

The night before, I had used O&O and it found only seven (7) fragged files. All I'm doing is fooling around with my new toy.."O&O Defrag"

Thanks Sherm. I downloaded that little program and It Ran this morning when I booted up. I didn't expect it to start BEFORE my logon screen came up. That "Blue Screen" that came up gave me a little start though. Before I read it, I thought I had a BSOD.

i'm not enough of a techie to understand what it really does or what good..but a google suggests it is a good way to boot up...btw, if it should come across one of your sys files that is highly fragmented, it will take some time to sort that out. that's about the only downside i know of...and should you run across that situation, you can always defeat it from starting by hitting a keyboard key before it begins to run through its processes.
