Thread: shore lines

    Question shore lines

Many of the shore lines in FSX are squared off at right angles. Is thereany way to get more realistic shorelines?

Ultimate Terrain or other add-on Scenery as they come available.
BTW - at what texture resolution are you running?

But last time I went to the beach, the beach was nicely squared off with right angles....

Ultimate Terrain X does wonders for beaches and coastlines, I would look into it.

You don't say where this is. Do you have addon scenery in that area? Have you recently updated FS with SP2/Acceleration? If so, that can affect some scenery, and require that you 'repair' the scenery.

From the things I hear I now think that Ultimate Terrain is going to be the next addon I buy for FSX. Does it hurt the fps? As for addons Im only using Service Pack 1, I have tried Service Pack 2 several times and it seems to do bad things to my FSX. The area that I was flying when I really noticed the squared shore lines was Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh WI.
96WI Vette. I live only about 15 miles from there. Although I've noticed the messed up shore lines in most areas.

To answer the other question, all my sliders are to the far right as high as they can go except for traffic, weather and autogen. those 3 are at 50%. I run at about 30 fps

Here's a couple of shots of the Lake Winnebago area if you want to see the difference w/ UTX.

It depends on how you have it configured. I'm using an out-of-the-box configuration (except for the nighttime street lighting effect which causes a big FPS hit for me so I turned it off). I did see a maybe 3-4 second FPS drop, a definite worthwhile trade off for me. If that bothers you, it's fully configurable and you can turn off individual effects to your hearts desire. The setup program is great in that it gives you an estimate of the performance impact of each individual effect.

If all you're interested in is coastlines and beaches and turned off the other effects, in my estimation you would see no frame rate hit at all.

If you're going to get UTX, also consider Ground Environment X which is a perfect companion to UTX. GEX causes little or no FPS hit. If you're only going to get one or the other, UTX is the way to go.

Thanks for the help. I looked at the screen shots, it looks very similar to what I currently have. It maybe that I live in this area (Omro WI) and Im to picky. In reality there's a lot more wooded area and the shore line is crowded with homes. It's a shallow lake and rather brown and mucky. but the western shore is quite filled with homes and marina's. The airport in Oskosh WI (KOSH) nearby is where the EAA has it's annual AirVenture airshow. Microsoft does a small attempt to include it in the flight sims but the real show is something that every aircraft enthuseist must see. I do have Instant Scenery and Ive working on adding objects to make it look better. Considering that Im a trucker with limited time on the computer this has been very slow going. Once again thanks for your support and help.
