Thread: what antivirus software are you using?

  1. Default

I don't use any. Only a basic free firewall from Zone Labs.
If something fishy is going on,I scan with Hijack This, and remove whatever is not supposed to be present. But,there never is,and will never be. Cause I don't push links I do not know what is in messenger or any other IM. I do not open or click links in mail from people I do not know who is. I do not visit fishy websites and click "yes, scan my pc now". Or install anything that just pops up telling you to install so that you can win a million dollars. Btw. I use FireFox,much safer than Explorer. In addition,I clean my computer regularly with CCleaner, something everyone should do

Everyone should follow those guidelines whenever they're on the internet. The problem with this approach, however, is that many of the latest security problems are through plug-ins like Flash and Quicktime, and could come from legitimate sites that have been compromised. I've seen forums much like this one hacked. Maybe the people doing it just wanted to vandalize the site. Then again maybe they left something behind.

    I'm using a freeware Bit Defender 10

One thing that drives me nuts is you have to pay for subscriptions....per year, I hate that

I have been using AVG for a few years now. Every now and then I will break away and try something different just to see what's new on the market.

I love AVG but the biggest problem I have with AVG 8.0 is that it has become so bloated, just like Norton and McAfee. The link scanner feature slows down your browsing way too much. There is no option in the custom install to choose which components are installed. I had to install AVG 8.0 with a command line with a series of switches just to not have link scanner and some other junk installed.

Just give me a competent virus scanner. Leave the rest to me.
I don't know what you're talking about. I browse fine and right now my AVG 8.0 scanner is scanning as I type this. No slow down what so ever.

But if you must, I would advise keeping your scan sceduled in the wee hours when you are asleep. That way, you won't get bothered at all.

NOD32 haven't had any problems in the last 1 using it. Just brought a 2yr licence for £39. Uses a lot processes then AVG.

There has been some trouble with AVG and its Linkscanner recently. Basically it was causing large jumps in traffic to websites. Grisoft released a fix for this a couple days ago.

Very Interesting. Don't know if there is any connection between this problem and another problem I have been having with AVG.

I have AVG 7.5 and am quite satisfied with it. It updates every day without being an obnoxious big file size. (I have Dial Up) The last couple of months I got a reminder every now and then that 7.5 will NOT be updated after June 25. OK.

I am always relunctant to try something new when what I've got works fine. If it ain't broke....

Maybe a week..maybe two ago, I went to AVG to "do the deed": Download AVG 8.0 Free. It's 47MB so that is significant for Dial Up. I started the download and ...eventually it told me I'm looking at 18 hours PLUS to do the download. The KB/s transfer were ridiculously low. My guess would be that 47Mb should take me around three hours based on past experience. I figured the AVG Server was overwhelmed with download requests so I ABORTED.

AVG 7.5 Continues to be Updated Every Day. Any thoughts? SPOFF

Maybe they extended support for the older version. I would keep trying to update, however, as they will likely drop support sooner or later. If you still can't download it, Avast is another good free anti-virus app.

I've been using Norton since 2006. Just yesterday, though, I updated to a newer version of Norton, and now I cannot "disable" the anti-virus like I did before.
I'm thinking on switching to McAffee, which my wife uses on her laptop, as it seems to not use so much resources.

Any ideas on how to disable the new Norton,BTW?The older version, I was able to right click then disable. This one doesn't have that option anymore. Doesn't seem to slow FSX down at the moment, but I'd like to know for future reference.

Go to Norton's site and download their removal tool?? That's the best way I can think of.

I would look at Kaspersky or Eset NOD32 if you are willing to pay for an anti-virus app, or AVG or Avast for free ones. All of these are lighter on the resources than either Norton or McAffee.
