Thread: Scenery.cfg - Areas disappear after setup

  1. Default Scenery.cfg - Areas disappear after setup

I've recently done a complete uninstall / reinstall of FS9 and have found a frustrating problem with my scenery.cfg that I'm hoping someone knows how to fix. The problem is that after I've installed a scenery and its either been added to the list automatically or manually, it sometimes disappears when I start FS9. FS9 does go through the scenery update messages during the initial load, but when I get into the scenery list, the new additions are missing.

Has anyone experienced this? and if so, how can I get around it without doing another install (reinstalling this game takes me about a week because of time constraints and I don't want to do it again unless I have to)?

    Thanks,
    Greg

When you say "added to the list automatically" are you referring to the process in the Scenery Library where you "activate" (add) a new scenery addon? Or do you mean something else entirely.

I also note note you mention adding scenery "manually". Are you speaking of editing the scenery.cfg file (the one which resides in your main FS2004 folder) manually? There is another copy of the scenery.cfg file in the same folder as the FS9.cfg file and I never touch it.

My experience has been that is it always safest to add new scenery via the Scenery Library process rather than attempting to edit the scenery.cfg file.

Perhaps if you clarified your statements a bit, someone may be able to offer help.

Well, automatically here refers to some scenery installers adding the scenery into the cfg as part of the installer. Manually refers to adding the scenery through the scenery library function of FS9. At this point, neither method works reliably (even going in and "manually" adding a scenery that should have been added automatically) and I'm starting to think I may have to do a second reinstall...

What I'm finding is that something is actually causing FS9 to revert to an earlier version of the scenery.cfg, even through I've removed all possible earlier versions (backups be darned...l at this point if it doesn't work I'll just have to do a reinstall), and the earlier version doesn't seem to have any consistency... in some cases I'll be able to successfully install 3-5 sceneries without reversion, with the next install taking it back 3 steps, while other times I'll try to install the same scenery for 7-8 tries (one of the previously working ones I should mention) with no luck.

You might try using Flight Sim Manager - I beleive it is available here at Flightsim as fsm285.zip

You will also need the patch which extends the program's working date. That file is named fsmgr.zip

Be SURE you read and follow the patch instructions carefully.

Alternately you can use the program called Run as Date - available here:

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/run_as_date.html

The Flight Sim Manager has a fine utility which will go into your scenery.cfg file and correct any errors it finds.

Before doing a complete, clean reinstall I sure would attempt to correct the scenery.cfg file using this ulility.

    Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that one...

What I've found is that the actual scenery.cfg (in the FS9 main folder) shows any changes that were made either by me or by an installer, but then on loading the game, the scenery.cfg is rewritten back to what it was prior to changes... very odd, but what can be done about it, I don't know...

I'm going to get flight sim manager now to see if it can identify the root of the problem...

"OPA" it seems the FSM prg is no longer available in FlightSim library. Any ideas where a copy may be hiding ?

Sorry about that. The patch is available here at Flightsim though.
