Thread: Suspension Compression

    Default Suspension Compression

    Just wondering if suspension compression is modeled into any of the default aircraft in FS9. I've seen it in replays of the larger planes, but don't know what version of FS it was, but it sure looks awesome. I could take a 737 up for a spin, but I don't even want to sit in one till I'm ready, plus I'd probably crash it anyway.

    I'm flying the baron right now and from what I've seen from real footage it doesn't compress.

    Thanks guys!

    Though I never notice the defaults much as I rarely fly them. I would guess the models aren't designed to be that high fidelity like you are mentioning. If you want high fidelity pick up a nice decently modeled addon. Some of the better free ones out there are done that way. They don't need to be payware to get that kind of modeling accuracy. If it's the Boeing 737 that you want, I'd recommend the TinMouse II model or one of the models made by Erick Cantu.

    The default B737 has the following settings:

    contact_points
    point.0=1, 40.00, 0.00, -8.40, 1181.1, 0, 1.442, 55.92, 0.6, 2.5, 0.9, 4.0, 4.0, 0, 220.0, 250.0
    point.1=1, -7.75, -8.58, -8.60, 1574.8, 1, 1.442, 0.00, 1.0, 2.5, 0.9, 6.9, 6.9, 2, 220.0, 250.0
    point.2=1, -7.75, 8.58, -8.60, 1574.8, 2, 1.442, 0.00, 1.0, 2.5, 0.9, 7.1, 7.1, 3, 220.0, 250.0

    The numbers in bold are listed as:

    //8 Static Compression (feet) (0 if rigid)
    //9 Max/Static Compression Ratio

    So the nose gear will static compress 0.6 feet and the main's 1.0 feet at a max ratio of 2.5.

    The Baron's compression settings are 0.42 ft on the nose and 0.5 ft on the mains.

    The animation is pretty quick on those aircraft. Not as slow as on some payware.

    Let the plane roll a little and check in spot view when you
    hit the brakes??

    Most of the payware aircraft, PMDG 747,Leveld 767 do model this as they have more detail in the landing gear systems. As Kimber said it may be modeled in some GA aircraft,but probably happens more quickly due to the lighter weights.

    From my experience the default FS planes do have suspension compression enabled but just aren't usually configured that well, or the model animation is not the best. Freeware models like Erick Cantu's 737-200 for example have really good gear suspension animation as well as most of his models. For Erick's 737-200 model I refined the contact points even more so that the gear height was corrected as well as the gear/ground interaction was totally smooth and consistent - that is, not floating or sinking whatsoever. Also configured a contact point per wheel just for fun. If you want to check this out just search this file library for "b732usa.zip" or my name to list all my files.

    Contact points are not always easy to get right and is one of the areas where I am very fussy when it comes to a new plane release - sometimes it is easy to get the right result and there are times where it is just not that simple due to the way that FS "interprets" the contact points and FDEs...

    I've seen a few models with some good compression, but the one I think is one of the best is the Lockheed Super Constellation by Mike Stone (SCONNIE.ZIP). You won't be dissapointed.

    I looked at most of the default, the DC-3 is the only one that
    has working compression!! I did not check the heavies!!

    I guess it would make sense that you should notice it more on the heavier aircraft and not on the smaller ones, especially if you're greasing the landings.

    Kimber, yes the nose does compress a great deal when applying brakes. Actually it seems over exaggerated, but I was thinking more on landing. It just seems that the front and main gear hit like a brick, but thanks for checking all of the aircraft!

    Thanks Reggie for that stuff on the contact points. I think I'll try to find footage of actual aircraft landings for the different models and play around with those settings. Hell, maybe I can come up with something for you guys.

    Philip, I'll check your files straight away.

    Awesome replies all, thanks!

    Hi Mike,

    No problem. Hope this helped though.

    All the best,

    Philip.
