Thread: Advice for newb online w cesna

  1. Default Advice for newb online w cesna

Id like some advice for starting on line for the first time. Im comfortable with the cesna 172 g1000 setup.

Someone recomended VATSIM to learn phrasology. Which is my biggest downfall. All Ive been doing is pushing number bottons do to radio stuff. But its pretty hard core with vatsim and will take a while with my real work schedule to read up on it.

I know the MS online is a little more lax with these things. So two things, is there a glosery for talking to ATC, and 2, what would you recomend for my first multiplayer experience with Gamespy that came with FSX?

    Thanks

    Lightbulb Good Question

    Hello Ace_Dueces,

Welcome,,,,,let's see,,,you're post has me going a different directions and I've got something for each,,,,so in no particular order I'll try to cover your concerns,,,,,at least get the ball rolling,,,you will have to do the rest.

Save this link to your favs and look through it as time allows.

It is THE source for answers to most of the questions you have now and will have later.

    http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraff.../AIM/index.htm

Not being as wise guy here but you need to spell phraseology correctly in any subsequent searches to get the most out of them.

As far as on-line "simming" goes you are in as good a place as any to start right now. We hold monthly events that are about as laid back as you can get and not fall backward..LOL.

You can look high and low throughout this forum and see examples of what you want to know,,but most of it is at another site I'll give you the link to,,,that's hosted by one of our moderators here at FlightSim N3306TX,,,Mike Maddox......Mike takes a bow...;-).

    http://home.comcast.net/~tmaddox3/

Take some time and look at all of the links and info he has compiled. I've been a flight simmer for almost thirty years and I use it and the links inside for reference often.

Your welcome to come out and join us by registering for the next event that you have time for,,,,or catch some of us on the FSHost server 76.125.25.59.

We don't use Gamespy,,,,and I have uninstalled mine.

I not speaking badly of it ,,,I just don't find any use for it.

Go here http://www.chocolatesoftware.com/fshost/ and download and install FSHostSpy.
Perfectly safe and free,,,,no worries. You're running FSX so you'll need to pick up FSHostClient 1.1 while you're there. That will allow you to join FSHost sessions with others in FSX as well as FS2004 and some still are running FS2002. All this stuff is covered at Mike's website.

After a little research and a couple of outings with the "Good Times Gang" here,,you could jump in the deep end at VATSIM and one of the many Virtual Airlines on the internet and take it to whatever level you want.

And so ends yet another of the never ending sessions of long answers to short questions by yours truly....LOL.....I hope it helps.

    Best regards,
    salt_air

    Salt_air's bang on the nail there. Vatsim and most of the VAs are hot on correct procedures, we're not and we'll welcome you. Sometimes we do a little 'lite' ATC but even if you ignore all the instructions we'll only give a gentle reminder. The key points are;

    Identify yourself with each transmission
Always ask permission to enter a controlled circuit or runway
Anounce your intentions if there's no controller so other pilots are aware
    Acknowledge instructions
Keep comms short and to the point.

Why not join us on Sunday and see what it's all about (you're welcome to join just for the flying - the golf is a once or twice a year extra) We use Teamspeak for voice communication but please set a PushToTalk key, not voice activated transmission. Everyone stays on the same channel.

    www.goteamspeak.com

If you can fly something faster than the Cessna it'll help on this event.

    Good idea Mick!

Most of us just get on the server whenever we get some free time,,,,and,,,most of us never know when that is,,,,however once a month we have events when we all (that can) get together for two or three hours.

Get Teamspeak loaded up and show up Saturday 1500-1800 range EDT. Should be someone on then to help and to check everyone's connections for the event the next day. It will make everything else go so much better, faster and easier.

I will try to be out myself during that time on Saturday,,,,if not and you don't get help from anybody else Saturday then, show up early Sunday and I will walk you through what little needs to be done so you can fly with the group.

Read this link,,,which is to the post at the top of the forum describing the event,,,includes times and addresses and what not. Also important to click on the link in that post and register,,,,that way you'll recieve the password for the server in your email.

    http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?t=181441

Don't worry about the golf part,,,,of course unless you want to do that,,,,and if your more comfortable in the Skyhawk, then you could always start from a point closer to where we'll be landing,,,,really shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

Ed(LJ922) ,,a moderator for the forum says he wants to keep the flight time to around one hour so figure a start spot a little less than 100 miles from EGQL,,,given the 172's cruise speed.

If you need any more help,,,right up untill Sunday's event,,, post here and I or someone will be glad to help get you "hooked up".

    Thanks for the back-up Mick!!

Look forward to "seein'" everyone this week end.

The default King-Air should do it in around an hour. 737 somewhat less.

Event time on Sunday is 20:00GMT, 21:00 British Summer Time, that's 6pm Eastern Daylight I believe.

Strongly recommend checking connections on Saturday though, just in case you have a setting problem which prevents others from connecting.

    Thumbs up

Practice and connection help Saturday,,,,uh,,today at 2000GMT. Tea time eastern Mick...;-),,,,four o'clock

Plane choice not that important right now,,,,,I might fly in from Glasgow in a Cub...LOL,,,make use of practice to get connections squared away and get questions answered so you can relax and have some fun Sunday.

You need to get TeamSpeak loaded up and running and you need to get FSHost Client up and running,,,,,also register for Sunday here:

    mp-registrations@flightsim.com

If you can't get TS or FSHost client loaded and working then send me a private mesg here with your Windows Messenger address,,,,we'll use that to walk you through.

Did just fine back in the ol' days by the way.....;-)
