Thread: Acceleration Pack

    Default Acceleration Pack

I have just acquired this pack which has had some bad press. Something at the back of my mind says it is not advisable to instal with FSX upgraded to SP2.

Is that correct? Am I likely to disrupt a smooth running FSX SP 2 if I install the Acceleration Pack?

    jonahbird,

The main issue is whether you have any addons installed. If you do your best bet is to deinstall them, then deinstall FSX, then do a clean install of FSX, and then install Acceleration.

Note that in a perfect world deinstalling FSX will be followed by a manual deletion of all residual FSX-related folders, and by a manual purge of the registry to get rid of all FSX-related entries.

But if you don't have any addons currently installed, and if your FSX installation is currently working well, then you should be able to install Acceleration right on top of SP2 with no problems. However, this is not guaranteed so you should test and, if any new problems, do the deinstall procedure I described in the first two paragraphs.

These recommendations and observations are based on remarks made by Phil Taylor, the FS product manager.

    There are 2 issues:
    1)order of install
    2)add-ons

Acceleration has a lower version number than SP2, because it came before. So it will not install over top of SP2. You will have to uninstall just SP2, then install Acceleration. SP2 is included in Acceleration so you will not have to reinstall SP2 after that.

Add-ons may cause a problem, especially code add ons like tools or planes that have complicated gauge setups.

    jonahbird and PhilTaylor,

I stand corrected and will remember the correction. My apologies.

But, Phil, aren't you effectively saying that there are two functionally different versions of SP2? Or is it simply a version number difference?

Thanks guys. You've said enough to deter me from installing. Glad I asked. It has taken a lot of work and cash to get to where I am now. I will forget Acceleration. It was a gift anyway.

We didnt have time to write an installer smart enough to do the "install on top from either side" part hence the ordering requirement.

With that said, the goal was for it to be only a version number difference. I dont know we didnt reach that goal, just trying to be cautious.

I just installed Acceleration and keep getting "Aircraft Model not defined" messages when I use any mission in acceleration. Could this be an issue with having SP2 previously installed? I uninstalled SP2 before installing Acceleration and I also had Flight Deck 5 installed at the time (have the same issue with FD5). Not even sure if actually affects the sim or not (I'm new at this). I'm thinking I'll need to do a clean installation of everything (minus FD5). On another note I will say that the DX10 graphics in Acceleration are Awesome! If you're rig is DX10 capable I definitely recommend it!

If you can install Accel, it's well worth it. No 2D panels, but good planes/missions. Phil, can you uninstall SP2 only? It's listed as a separate option on my Un/Install control panel, like SP1 and Accel.
I fly through the valley of death, but I fear no evil, for I am at 80,000 feet and climbing. Let's powerdive and scare that poor soul in that Ultralight there.

If you have just SP2, you can uninstall it.

I do not believe you can uninstall just the SP2 that came with Acceleration as they are baked together. I could be wrong, but that is what I remember.

I can tell you from very frustrating experience that you need to make sure that you are installing Acceleration on a clean, virgin, untouched FSX. I had some add-ons (in the form of ASX, Xgraphics, GEX, Shockwave Lights Redux, Night EnvironmentX, and the sweet Nemeth CH53) and FSX was almost unplayable for me. Half the Acceleration missions wouldn't work (CTD and lock ups) and many times I couldn't fly in free flight either.

After a lot of pulling of hair and numerous "googling" and forum searching I ended up uninstalling and completely eradicating all traces that FSX was ever on my system.

After starting over from scratch I installed FSX, SP1, then Acceleration. I tested and tested, and then tested some more. And just to be safe I re-tested the first tests. No issues found. I almost passed out from joy. Then, I re-installed each add-on with the most recent patches or versions, one at a time and went through the testing phase for each one. It took me over a week just to re-install what little I had.

But, it was definitely worth the time and effort. FSX runs better than it ever had. I am pretty much trouble free (except for the logbook issues that have always occurred) now and really loving life.

So, in a round about way, I think Acceleration is definitely worth getting.
