Thread: black textures

  1. #1

    Question black textures

just installed the realair spitfire and thought i would add a couple of textures.

they show up as a black aircraft in both the preview screen and in the game itself.

any ideas what i may be doing wrong?

    FSX SP2
    Vista
    No DX10 preview

These are textures created by customers and offered on download sites?
Most likely they were made in a texture format (FS supports several) that isn't supported by the DX10 preview.
DX10 scraps support for some old and superceded texture formats that some people still insist on using for whatever reason.
Find a texture converter and convert the files to DXT3 format (I think it should work, someone correct me if I'm wrong) and they should show up. Do make sure you keep all filenames and pixel sizes the same.

They already are DTX3 format and I am not using DX10

I have the same problem with a repaint I got for the Captain Sim 757. When i looked into the folder, it appeared that some textures were simply missing (I compared the rapint folder to another folder and saw that the other had twice the other's amount of texture files). At present I didn't find a way to fix it, since I don't have the right texture files (which is highly irritating, since I have wanted this repaint for a long time), but I hope it helps.

Not all textures need be in the repaint texture folder. For example, lets say you've added a repaint into folder texture.x and placed new textures in there. Now, open that folder and you should see a file called texture.cfg which says where to get the others. Usually textures in the texture (first texture) folder contains the VC textures and does not need to be in every single folder.

If texture.cfg is missing, copy that file from one of the other texture folders and it should work.

Depending on how the aircraft was modelled and compiled, any untextured parts might appear completely black in FSX. If this is the reason behind it then there is no way around this, save for recompiling the model with the appropriate modifications.

EDIT - noticed it was for a repaint - if the original textures work then maybe try saving the repaints in normal .bmp format, then transfer them over to .dds format using imagetool.

I couldn't find a texture.cfg, so I did it differently: I took a livery that was made by the actual designers of the aircraft, and copied all it's files to the one with missing files, of course not copying over the ones that are already there. I opened up Flight Simulator, and there the aircraft was: now only the engines were black, but at least the wings had gotten a texture. So I guess I'll have to continue on searching for good texture files for the last bit.
