Thread: Internet connection question??

  1. #1

    Default Internet connection question??

We just changed from a 12mbs to a 2.5mbs, less that half the price,
we are making some budget adjustments!!

We can not tell a bit of difference?? It seems it may be a little faster??

We checked the speed of our "fast connection" several times and it
was, 12+ every time!! The new one checks at about 2+!!

Did we pay a lot for something that we didn't need??

yes, most people don't need that high speed.
It's really only useful when downloading large amounts of stuff all at the same time, and even then only if the servers you download from can pipe it to you fast enough.

Another place it can be useful is when running VPN connections, as those tend to transmit a lot of data.
But most people who don't work from home never need to do that.

    jwenting,

I know Google is my friend, but for the education of the readership as well as me ...

I've been playing with a program called TeamViewer which allows remote control of a PC, and which has VPN capability of some kind. The maker says that VPN has been included to allow the controlling PC to print to the remote PC, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of printer access setup dialogue.

What am I failing to understand?

You failed to illustrate your post with one of your usual scrumptious screenshots. I demand a refund.

I don't know that application, but most likely you can somehow tell it to print to the remote system which will output it to its default printer as if the print task were coming from that remote system itself.

Remote printing is always fun, especially if you're on a WAN and have no clue what building (or even what country) the printer is located

    jwenting,

Printing to the remote computer's default printer makes perfect sense. I'll fiddle with the program accordingly. Thanks.

What cable system are you on?

I have the standard package from Comcast, and my speed is only 6mbps... Powerboost kicks it up to around 10 for the first 30 seconds or so of downloads, but the maximum speed available is 8mbps for an extra $10/month. I can downgrade my service, but I'll end up with less than 1mbps.
