Default Can the default aircraft folder location be changed?

I would like to know if it would be possible to move my aircraft folder to my 2nd hard drive and somehow point FS2002 to the new location through some sort of configuration edit. This would allow me to free up a lot of space on my main hard drive without having to remove any aircraft. I appreciate any response. Thank you.

I moved the whole program from the "c:" drive to its own (fs2002) directory in the "d:" drive.
My system has one partitioned 60 gig hard drive, C: = 16 gigs and D: = 44 gigs. I knew I would be constantly adding to FS, and that would tend to fill my c: drive to near capacity. Things don't run so well when you have a nearly full C: drive.
All I did was copy it over and modify the desktop shortcut to point to D:\fs2002. It worked for me. You can try this without deleting the original until you feel its safe to delete fs2002 from c:.

I also try to load most programs on D: and store media files and Downloads such as pictures and music on D: as well.

You can't do much with the aircraft folder, but you can alias sounds and panels on another disk, with care. You can also install add-on scenery on another disk, with careful library use.

You can't it's hard coded and simply moving whole program directories from one partition to another could cause major problems as the registery enteries won't match.

If you're running out of space for the Windows swap file (or virtual memory as they call it) then change the location of the swap file from C: to D: would be a better solution.

Right click on My Computer, choose properties...and it's on the last tab I think (I'm assuming you're running 98, and I'm on my XP machine at the moment so I can't run you through the whole thing. Perhaps some nice 98 running sole could follow this up :-))

    Mark,

You are right about how to move the virtual memory, but sadly, I had already done this a long time ago. I am beginning to think my only alternative is to save my extra aircraft and scenery onto CDs and manually add and remove them to suit my flying needs. I badly need to clear up some drivespace. Like Arnie mentioned in his post earlier, "Things don't run so well when you have a nearly full C: drive." So true!

Thanks everyone for your replies! I'll keep searching for alternate solutions.

Papy, a thread at AVSIM on March 11, 2002 "Ways to backup FS2002" by GiZBUG helps.

Uwe's solution there (I think) was invented by Bill Lyons of FS98 Golden Wings and goes something like this...

    1) Rename your present FS folder to some other temporary name, like from C:\FS2002 to C:\FS_TEMP. (That was necessary).

2)Install a new 'dummy' FS from the Microsoft CD's onto D with the old original folder name but with a new driveletter, e.g. D:\FS2002, this will only be a shortlived dummy installation.

    3) Delete (NOT uninstall) the new dummy FS you just made at D:\FS2002, this perserves its registry entries.

    4) Copy and paste (not move) the old real FS to the new path, e.g. copy C:\FS_TEMP to D:\FS2002.

    5) Change any old shortcuts from C:\FS2002 to D:\FS2002.

    6) Rename C:\FS_TEMP back to C:\FS2002.

    7) You can then Uninstall C:\FS2002 whenever you are sure everything in D:\FS2002 is working right.

    8) I tried this years ago with GoldenWings, it worked but maybe I have bad memory to the correct details, so beware to use it...
