Thread: Loading terrain...............still.......still.........no ?

    Default Loading terrain...............still.......still.........no ?

I have only just loaded FSX for the first time and whilst so far it has been a very good experience, the moment I try and change any settings from within the game I get the 'Loading Terrain' message, the system freezes, and I have to give it 'Control/Alt/Delete' and force the app to quit.

I know this will be old hat to most of you. I have SP1 installed and nothing else.

    Is this common?

How long does it freeze for until you turn it off?

IF you've downloaded too many Birds and especially scenery then it will run slower...
And also, Your computer might not be pwoerful enough.

Hope you find out what's happened.

    Hi

No nothing has been downloaded. The computer is definitely powerful enough, see the mac pro thread for frame rates with sliders on max.

I'm not going to profess to know the answer.... but assuming the sim's "default" with no additions... I'm going to suggest drivers.... video...or other... have you tried changing the vid drivers... or updating your mother board (not even sure if that's applicable)....?

I am running it on a Mac pro (running windows natively) so the bootcamp drivers might not be the latest ones. Everything else is running smoothly though, and I am very impressed indeed with the performance.

As I said, it only happens when I am already in a flight, and to be honest I was changing locations more to have a poke around. In usual terms, I would not change locations after starting a flight.

Does it lock up after a consistent amount of time?? or is it random? (I only ask this to help those who might know the answer... sometimes you have to give a bit more information before someone recognizes the solution) OH, and are you changing to different locations, or just one area?

    Hi

Thanks for the tip. No not really, it's usually when it's on about 30% terrain loaded.

I have an update on this issue. Basically it seems that only one flight per session works reliably, and the best way to stop the problem occurring is to exit the sim, then restart.

I can't help you stop the lockup, but when you encounter it (I'm assuming you're running full screen), you might try hitting the ENTER key. I've had an occasional lockup (not with your frequency), and over time I've discovered that there's often a Microsoft Fatal Error message dialog box that is hidden in full screen, even though the focus has shifted to that box . IF that's the case, hitting enter will exit the sim (and likely restart it, as well).
