Default Gurus: Give me a Brake -- Please

    Yikes!

Yesterday I lost the brakes in FS2002. (Not sure that I ever had them, come to think of it.) That is, neither the ordinary brake key (".") nor the left/right toe brake keys (F11/F12) work at all. (Neither do the CH Yoke assignments, when changed or left as defaults.)

That is not to say that the brakes are weak or that the aircraft does not slow down enough. There are zero brakes. No sign in the "cockpit" nor any action of the aircraft.

Of course, the brakes work perfectly well in FS2000 (which is currently installed as well). And of course all the assignments in FS2002 are correct. And the keyboard and Yoke buttons all work as they should.

So, begrudgingly, I uninstalled and then reinstalled. Defragged inbetween. Took a couple of hours. Then restarted FS2002 in default settings.

    NO BRAKES! :-eek

How does one change the brakes? Not clear that there is anything in the FS2002.cfg file. Nor in any of the default aircraft aircraft.cfg files. Is there something in one's computer setup that might cause the FS2002 brakes to malfunction but not the FS2000 brakes? And this is with a default setup and using the default C-172 at Meigs.

(On loading of the flight, on Runway 36 of Meigs, the "BRAKE" sign is visible in white letters against a red background at the lower left of the cockpit. Hitting "." as one might normally do to tap the brakes has NO effect. Only by setting and unsetting the parking brake does the "BRAKE" sign go off and the aircrat begin to move. Perhaps surprisingly, one disables the parking brake by hitting "." as normal! So it's not the "." key that is the problem. Only the ability of the simulator to pick up the keyboard signal for BRAKE. Even if that keyboard assignment is changed.)

Needless to say, the sim is completely useless with zero braking.

Gee, I'm simply stumped here. :-hmmm

I'd love to hear any suggestions. Something has got to work...

    Thanks.

    Mike

The flightsim 2000 breaks were way to strong. i haven't played FS2002 yet, so i don't know. Maybe your just used to the overly strong FS2000 breaks.

There used to be a setting in FS98/2000 whereby in the KEY settings in the CONTROL SETUP, you could specify whether a keystroke was repeated when you held the key down, or if it registered as one keystrike instead.

I think this is what you should look for, because it's obvious nothing wrong wiht the button ... if you tap the key repeatedly, do you have brakes? If so, I would say that you need to change the key assignment of the "." key, so that if you press and hold it, it 'repeats' automatically, instead of just recording the single keystroke.

I do not have FS here atm (at work), but I'm CERTAIN this is the problem, I will have a look later! Let me know how you get on, by trying this out.
